Oktav 215 x 175 cm Rücken mit Fehlstelle im Pergament Einband berieben bestoßen und etwas fleckig Besitzvermerk von alter Hand auf Titel sehr zahlreiche zeitgenössische Marginalien innen wenig fleckig im Ganzen ordentlich erhalten. "Wolfgang Adam Lauterbach 1618 - 1678 war einer der bedeutendsten Juristen des usus modernus pandectarum in Württemberg. Im November 1648 erhielt er an der Universität Tübingen einen Lehrstuhl für Pandekten. . Neben der Lehrtätigkeit hatte Lauterbach auch mehrfach Ämter in der Universitätsverwaltung inne er wurde achtmal zum "rector magnificus" und oft zum Dekan der juristischen Fakultät gewählt. . Sein bekanntestes Werk ist das >Compendium Juris<. Dieses Werk wurde aber nicht von ihm selbst sondern von seinem Schüler Johann Jacob Schütz Pietist und Jurist 1640 - 1690 herausgegeben. Das Buch war eine der verbreitetsten Erläuterungen der Pandekten es wurde von 1679 bis 1744 vielfach aufgelegt." vgl. wikipedia. Seine besondere Bedeutung bekommt das vorliegende sehr breitrandige Exemplar durch die überbordenden Marginalien von Johann Friedrich Anton Meier Hildesheim 1724 - 1796 Paderborn der seinen vollen Namen selbstbewußt auf dem Vorsatz zu wissen gibt. Der Eintrag ist "Erfurt 1745" datiert Meier war damals dort Student. Später wurde er einer der angesehensten Juristen in Paderborn wo er Hofrichter Geheimer Rat und Kanzler war. vgl. Clipped front panel of original peach dust jacket pasted to front pastedown ownership inscription in blue pen to ffep: "Kenneth Hopkins Austin Texas 18/4/61" Warren Roberts' inscription in blue pen below his Foreword: "For Kenneth Hopkins who subscribes to my view that he & I should always receive books without cost - that by nature we are of that wont" and finally inscribed in black ink and an attractive hand below the colophon: "For Kenneth Hopkins from 'Michael Adam' & Kim Taylor" gently toned some foxing heaviest at rear pastedown else clean and tight. Good An impressive UT Austin-related association copy of this second Ark Press edition of D.H. Lawrence's Look! We Have Come Through! 1959 the cycle of poems celebrating his relationship with Frieda fondly inscribed to the British poet and UT Austin lecturer Kenneth Hopkins by its illustrator and Ark Press founder Kim Taylor who published under the name Michael Adam and fellow academic Francis Warren Roberts a pre-eminent D. H. Lawrence scholar and bibliographer who commissioned the Ark Press edition and contributed the Introduction. Francis Warren Roberts 1916–1998 played a key role in the development of what later became the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center HRHRC at UT Austin including facilitating the acquisition of material for its stellar D. H. Lawrence collection: during his Fulbright lectureship at the University of Pisa in 1956-8 he'd had the thrill of being offered a box of "manuscripts letters photographs and memorabilia related to Lawrence Giuseppe 'Pino' Orioli and their circle in Florence" by a bookseller in the city. HRHRC also holds the archive of Kenneth Hopkins 1914-1988 the British poet and novelist publisher and lecturer. Born in Bournemouth and apprenticed to a builder's merchant at 14 by 1938 Hopkins was selling his poems door to door eventually reaching London where he fell in with the anarchist and publisher Charles Lahr and his circle at the Red Lion Street bookshop. Hopkins went on to found two small presses of his own Grasshopper Broadsheets 1942-45 and Warren House Press 1969-1988 as well as the Saturdays a London literary club for poetry appreciation. Kim Taylor 1919- founded the Ark Press in 1953 with its first completed book being D. H. Lawrence's essay Life 1954 illustrated by Ru van Rossem's wood engravings. The following year Warren Roberts commissioned Taylor to design and print Look! We Have Come Through! the manuscript of which UT Austin had purchased. Following this successful production which required a second edition this one Harry Ransom then UT Austin's Vice President as well as Director of HRHRC offered Taylor the role of Consultant to the University's publications programme. An engraving from the Description de l'Egypte one of the masterpieces of French printing and the birth of a new field: Egyptology. A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte's conquests in 1798 and 1799 the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates of which 72 colored as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte's Eastern Armies. The Egyptian campaign' militarily a disaster demonstrates through the engravings of the Description d'Egypte the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d'Egypte Egyptian Institute who followed Napoleon's army. The Institut gathered together in Egypt the mathematician Monge the chemist Berthollet the naturalist Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as well as numerous artists engineers architects and doctors. They were tasked with re-discovering modern and ancient Egypt and displaying its natural treasures as well as the know-how of its inhabitants.This edition the so-called Imperial edition of the plates for the Description de l'Egypte was printed in four large formats two of which were specially created for it and christened Moyen-Egypte and Grand-Egypte. A special press was built to print it the process extending over 20 years from 1809 to 1829. The Imperial edition proved so popular that a second edition this time in black and white and without the Egypte ancienne et moderne watermark known as the Royal Edition was published during the Restoration by the printing house of C.-L.-F. Panckoucke Paris.The engravings of the Description d'Egypte owe a great deal to Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon illustrator diplomat collector and later Director of the Musée Napoléon the Louvre. His exploration of the South of Egypt gave Bonaparte the idea of sending the experts of the Institut there thus creating a faithful and complete portrait of the area. This was the research gathered together from 1802 in the mammoth Description de L'Egypte.Denon embarked on this story of archeological exploration at the age of 51 reaching first Alexandria and then Cairo before exploring Upper Egypt. Along with the members of the Institut d'Egypte the Natural History Museum's painter H.J. Redouté brother of Pierre-Joseph Redouté author of Roses the mineralogist Dolomiue and the draughtsman Joly Denon then explored the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt. When however he joined the 21st Light Infantry Regiment as it marched across Upper Egypt in pursuit of the retreating Mameluks in November 1798 he found himself the only civilian. In the very midst of the battle itself he reeled off sketches of the works of art that peppered his path right up to the threshold of the Sudan.
