This seminal first translation of the work was undertaken by J.F. Schiller who finished the first part of the translation in time for it to appear as soon as 1776 the same year as the original English edition. The second part appeared in 1778 the same year as the exceedingly scarce first French translation. (Verlagstext) // Wenn heute ein Vorhaben wie die Neuherausgabe des ökonomischen Hauptwerks von Adam Smith in Angriff genommen wird, so stellt sich die Frage, welche Bedeutung einer Lektüre der "Untersuchung über Natur und Wesen des Volkswohlstandes" nach nahezu 200 Jahren seit der ersten Ausgabe noch - oder wieder - zuzumessen ist. Die Frage erscheint umso berechtigter, als das Credo des ökonomischen Liberalismus, das Adam Smith als Konsequenz seiner Analyse formulierte, auch innerhalb der bürgerlichen Theorie weitgehend als überwunden gilt. Adam Smith will noch das allgemeine Interesse verwirklicht sehen mittels des Strebens der Individuen nach ihrem eigenen Vorteil, das befreit sein soll von allen "Begünstigungs- und Beschränkungssystemen" und lediglich den "Gesetzen der Gerechtigkeit" verpflichtet. In diesem Konzept einer harmonischen Gesellschaft, in der der Gegensatz zwischen Egoismus und Sittlichkeit, der für die herrschenden Vorstellungen des Mittelalters noch konstitutiv war, durch Versöhnung beider im Verlauf ihrer wechselseitigen Verwirklichung aufgelöst erscheint, findet die praktische Veränderung seiner Zeit ihren Niederschlag: die Emanzipation der bürgerlichen Klasse, die sich selbst nicht anders begreifen konnte als eine Addition von Individuen und deren Selbstverständnis noch ihre revolutionäre Rolle als Träger der gesellschaftlichen Vernunft und der Produktivität gegenüber den schmarotzenden feudalen Klassen repräsentierte.
