'La religion manichéenne venue d'Iran envahit l'Égypte romaine vers la fin du Ille siècle. Les émissaires du prophète Mani s'infiltrent partout: dans le peuple mais aussi parmi les intellectuels de culture grecque. La philosophie dominante est alors le néo-platonisme. C'est au nom de ce dernier qu'Alexandre professeur de philosophie à Lycopolis Assiout en Haute-Égypte va engager le combat contre la menace dualiste venue de l'Est. Le traité d'Alexandre Contre la doctrine de Mani est l'un des plus anciens témoignages connus sur la religion nouvelle: il a été écrit moins de vingt ans après la mort du prophète. C'est aussi l'un des mieux documentés grâce aux contacts directs d'Alexandre avec les missionnaires manichéens Papos et Thomas. Premier volume, seul paru du vivant de l'auteur (pasteur protestant mort en 1738) porte le simple titre imprimé en rouge et noir avec une large vignette représentant le temple de Janus Bifrons. Dans le tirage suivant avec le tome II, en 1739, le titre est en noir. Erreur de pagination dans le cahier Rr : 393, 394 ...400, au lieu de 313, 314, 315... 321, sans manque de pages (confirmé par les réclames et signatures), manque de cuir sur le dos et sur le premier plat au niveau du mors, coins émoussés, cuir taché, quelques rousseurs et pages brunies sinon intérieur bon état.
