Wielgolaski, FE (editor) F E
Fennoscandian Tundra Ecosystems. Part 2 - Animals and Systems Analysis
Berlin Heidelberg New York: Springer-Verlag 1975. Illustrated with charts and diagrams large octavo pp xiv 337 fore-edge slightly foxed very slightly used internally a neat name and date on the front endpaper decorated boards slightly worn and bumped the spine faded. Animals are important components of any ecosystem and it is impossible to describe structure and functioning of the Fennoscandian tundra ecosystems without including this part of the system. However the strong diversity between functionally highly different fauna groups makes it impossible to study all groups in great detail with the funds and expertise available in Fennoscandia. Relatively few productivity studies were carried out on animals in Fenno scandian tundra regions before the IBP projects started in 1969-1970. Within IBP more fauna groups have been investigated in the Norwegian tundra project than in the other countries due to better financial support. Even in Norway however only a limited number of invertebrate and vertebrate taxons is studied. General lack of information on the same animals in various parts of the Fennoscandian tundra makes it more difficult to present structural and functional comparisons of fauna for the whole region than in plants and microorganisms see Part 1 of Fennoscandian Tundra Ecosystems. Brief surveys on faunal problems within the area are given in the introduction to the animal section and general aspects are also discussed in the four first papers of the volume. First Edition. Boards. Good. Springer-Verlag Hardcover

Willey FE. F. E.
Herbarium Collection with Original Pen-and-Ink Illustrations Enlivening the MountedSpecimens
Claremont 1889. Wooden box. Very Good. N.d. circa late 19th century. 52 separate sheets housed within a handsome wooden carrying case or box. Fifty of these sheets contains a dried and flattened plant sample -- flowers leaves and stems -- with the plant or flower identified in a neat handwriting and most unusual accompanied by a pen and ink vignette. The vignettes are a mix -- some replicate the plant or leaf and thus might be regarded as modestly scientific in purpose; others are of objects or animals which a pleasant to look at or have an appealing association to the artist -- tennis racquets a sailing boat an owl and the like; yet a third group and these are to us the most special are pure whimsy with a touch of humor. This third category also doesn't relate to the plants or flowers. Perhaps one thing that ties all the extra artistic fillips together is that they have an outdoorsy sporty or summer day quality about them. It goes without saying that the plant samples are arranged neatly and even artistically. We know who the collector and artist was because his name is on both a title page and a brass label attached to the carrying case. The title page also informs us that this collection was created during the Summer of 1889 and for Claremont High School. We would guess that the Claremont in question is one in New Hampshire based on where this collection was found but we can not state that definitively. At the time Claremont was a prosperous mill town and presumably this young Willey would have been from an affluent family who afforded him the leisure to create such a collection. including a title page a second prelim with a pencil illustration of a rose and "Handle with Care" exhortation and 50 leaves with leaf and flower samples every one of which also has an original sketch of some kind. The box really an artist's carrying case with wooden handles attached with thin braided rope to the wood an brass clasps and studs measures 35 by 27.5 cm and is 4.5 cm deep. Each of the leaves the sheets is 32.5 by 25 cm. Loss of some leaves and some chipped leaves as to be expected given the dryness of the organic material. Chips on the side of the title. The title and other prelim are discolored by the metal bar which has held them down in the box.

unknown books

Williams, FE; RR Marett, writer of foreword F E R R
Orokaiva Magic
London: Oxford University Press 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First Edition. Hardcover. The Orokaiva consist of several tribes that reside in the Oro Province of Papua New Guinea. The Orokaiva have a history of European contact as Papua New Guinea was annexed by the British government in 1888 and subsequently became an Australian territory in 1905. The Orokaiva religion is concerned primarily with spirits of the dead. A Taro Cult was established in the early 1900's and was originally directed toward supplicating taro spirits. This quickly shifted towards the placation of spirits of ancestors and departed relatives who are said to control taro growth. The Orokaiva Taro Cult is both a fertility cult and cult of the dead. Religious practitioners called taro men act as medicine men sorcerers and weather magicians.--db of Religious History. Orokaiva Magic is a psychological interpretation of the reasoning behind the practice of magic among the Orokaiva. Descriptions of Orokaiva folkways are often interspersed with witticisms. The predominant theme that permeates all phases of native life seems to be the effect of the newly introduced Taro cult upon the Orokaiva. Since Williams was writing this monograph primarily for the use of the Papuan Government a great deal of emphasis is placed on how Orokaiva society could be improved by introducing new educational policies. Francis Edgar Williams 9 February 1893 - 12 May 1943 was an Australian anthropologist who worked for the government of the Territory of Papua from 1922 to 1942. While in the field Williams did many of the standard tasks of anthropologists at the time he differed from his peers by revisiting field sites many times over years. This frequent exposure to the Papuan culture led his work to be far more realistic than the often romanticized fieldwork and subjects of his contemporaries."The three parts of this book were presented as Anthropological reports nos. 6 7 and 8 to the Papuan government." Lightly bumped corners/head and tail light toning uncut pages else tight bright and unmarred. Presentation copy from author to W.F. Armstrong. Dark blue cloth with gilt decorative device. 8vo. 225pp. Illus. b/w folding map frontis. Lacking DJ. Oxford University Press hardcover

The four-page introduction by Sir John Murray Lieutenant-Governor of Papua is a worthy addition to the report.
Loosely inserted are ten original vintage prints each 87 × 116 mm or the reverse of photographs reproduced as full-page plates in the published report.
