Il s ‘agit d’un récit très romanesque bien que l’auteur affirme dans son introduction “ Ce livre est vrai; pas un mot dans ce long récit d’aventures qui ne soit l’expression d’un fait réel”... Il s’agit de l’histoire d’un homme qui suit, tout à fait par hasard, un groupe d’insurgés fuyant les soldats du Roi d’Espagne et qui , dans la panique, s’embarquent sur un bateau qui sera pris dans une tempête. Le bateau va accoster à Tanger, au Maroc, et cet homme, ainsi que ses compagnons vont, pour survivre, renier leur religion chrétienne en faveur de l’Islam, d’où le titre... A partir de ce moment, le “Renégat “ --le narrateur-, loin des avantages espérés, va connaître de terribles épreuves . Celles-ci ne prendront fin que plusieurs années plus tard, grâce à un subterfuge, qui lui permettra de rentrer en Espagne via Marseille.Ce roman, extrêmement bien écrit, eût un grand succès . Il est écrit à une époque où l’Algérie et les “Maures” intéressent évidemment beaucoup les lecteurs (la guerre de conquête de l’Algérie, difficile, commence en 1830 et les Marocains vont apporter leur appui à Abd-el-Kader, qui sera vaincu en 1847 ) . Il est en réalité l’oeuvre d’une femme, Fanny REYBAUD (1802-1870), qui eût une carrière d’auteure extrêmement prolifique, écrite principalement sous le pseudonyme de A. ARNAUD. Les deux volumes de cet ouvrage devenu rare se trouvent dans un ETAT TRES SATISFAISANT‎
