Zoya's Story: An Afghan Woman's Struggle for Freedom
William Morrow 2002 Zoya's Story is a young woman's searing account of her clandestine war of resistance against the Taliban and religious fanaticism at the risk of her own life. An epic tale of fear and suffering courage and hope Zoya's Story is a powerful testament to the ongoing battle to claim human rights for the women of Afghanistan.Though she is only twenty-three Zoya has witnessed and endured more tragedy and terror than most people do in a lifetime. Zoya grew up during the wars that ravaged Afghanistan and was robbed of her mother and father when they were murdered by Muslim fundamentalists. Devastated by so much death and destruction she fled Kabul with her grandmother and started a new life in exile in Pakistan. She joined the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan which challenged the crushing edicts of the Taliban government and she made dangerous journeys back to her homeland to help the women oppressed by a system that forced them to wear the stifling burqa condoned public stoning or whipping if they ventured out without a male chaperon and forbade them from working. Zoya is our guide our witness to the horrors perpetrated by the Taliban and the Mujahideen "holy warriors" who had defeated the Russian occupiers. She helped to secretly film a public cutting of hands in a Kabul stadium and to organize covert literacy classes as schooling-branded a "gateway to Hell" -- was forbidden to girls. At an Afghan refugee camp she heard tales of heartrending suffering and worked to provide a future for families who had lost everything. The spotlight focused on Afghanistan after the New York and Washington terrorist attacks highlights the conditions of repression and fear in which Afghan women live and makes Zoya's Story utterly compelling. This is a memoir that speaks louder than the images of devastation and outrage; it is a moving message of optimism as Zoya struggles to bring the plight of Afghan women to the world's attention.239p. 1st US Edition. Hardcover. As New/As New. William Morrow hardcover

Folland Charles
The Kinabatangan Remembered 1967 - 1972
Kota Kinabalu 2017. Illustrated octavo pp xii 172 a very good new copy in dustwrapper. This is the story of the Sungai Kinabatangan and its people as it was precisely 50 years ago. It follows the great river as it meanders its way across central Sabah from its source in misty montane forests through vast tracts of rainforests to its immense estuary of mangrove swamps fronting the Sulu Sea. Between source and mouth it is a river of marked contrasts: of crystal-clear headwaters flowing over boulder-strewn beds; of fast-flowing upper reaches subject to rapid fluctuations of level and of a broad floodplain periodically inundated by angry swirling waters. Fewer than 25000 people lived in the area at that time and they looked to the river and its tributaries for their means of communication - there were no roads. With few exceptions their kampongs of frail bamboo houses were situated on the river banks. These self-sufficient communities obtained the essentials of life food and shelter from the surrounding forests and the river itself by hunting collecting fishing and tending their crops of rice and tapioca. Fully illustrated with contemporary photographs. First Edition. Pictorial boards. New/New. Hardcover

FOLSOM Robin : CLYMER Floyd : Travel : Motorcycling
8000 MILES ON A LIGHTWEIGHT: Motorcycling Through Eleven European Countries on $4.80 Per Day Can Be As Easy As Driving Across Pennsylvania Original Typescript Article with Original Photographs
San Francisco California 1950. Near fine. Original typescript. 317pp. WITH 3 hand-drawn maps. WITH 4 black and white silver print photographs ranging in size from approximately 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" to 5" x 7." Typescript pages paper clipped together in 4 separate bundles with some indentations from clips. Otherwise all well preserved neat. About near fine overall.

An earnest and detailed typescript travel account written by a Robin Folsom of San Francisco documenting a portion of his 1949 approximately 8000 mile trip through Western Europe on a Peuguot 125cc motorcycle likely a P55. This the file copy of post-War automotive publisher Floyd Clymer to whom it was submitted presmably for consideration in one of his myriad pocket books on automobile and motorcycle interest which were as ubiquitious on newstands and in bookstores in the 1950's U.S. as small Peugot motorbikes were in France during the same. Folsom touts the ease and affordability of travel through Europe by motorcycle setting the tone for the article with this opening line from the introduction: "It is as easy to motorcycle across Western Europe today as it is to cross Ohio or Pennsyvania." He goes on to document the affability of the Western Europeans encounted along his solo journey the logistics of motorcycling gushing over the ease of operation and comfort of the "125" affordability of the journey which he estimates cost less than $5.00 per day etc. Folsom's travels which began in Paris took him southwest into Spain on a course nearly straight for Madrid then back east along the southern coast of France into Italy where the typescript ends. His journey continued though these three chapters are all we have indeed they appear to be all that was submitted with plans to produce more should Clymer have been interested as a summary outline page is included with details on potential chapters 4-10 though we find no evidence of it ever having made it to publication and the existence of additional writings by Folsom is unknown to us. 3 hand-drawn likely traced maps illustrate the contents along with 4 black and white snapshots including a clear enlargement of Folsom atop the Peugot and parked before the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris replete with saddlebags a fuel can his temporary travel license plate etc. appearing in the frame. An endearing and rich primary travel account aboard an inconic Europoean motorbike in post-World War II Europe with association to an important publisher in American transportation. unknown
