Wilfrid Blunt's Egyptian Garden : Fox Hunting in Cairo
London: The Stationery Office 1999. 12mo pp 4 114 paperback a very good copy - as new. Postage will be reduced. A fox-hunt took place in the desert near Cairo in 1901. The fox was chased into the garden of a private landowner Wilfrid Blunt and the hounds and hunt followed it. As well as a house and garden the land contained a stud farm with valuable horses. Blunt's staff challenged the trespassers - who though army officers were not in uniform - and beat them when they refused to turn back. For this the staff were accused of assault against army officers and imprisoned the assumption being that the British must be in the right and the native staff must be in the wrong simply because of their respective situations and that as a British civil servant Blunt would do what the army wanted. The story and its sorry outcome are narrated through papers and private correspondence by Blunt the army officers and senior civil servants called in to smooth things over. Other evidence suggests that Blunt was a rather unpleasant character particularly to his family but in this case he did his best to protect his staff and get them out of prison safely causing the incident to become a public scandal against the British government.
