Autograph Letter Signed 'W. P. Schreiner' from William Philip Schreiner Prime Minister of the Cape Colony during the Second Boer War to 'My dear J. S. C.' J. S. Cox suggesting a meeting while in London for the enquiry into the Jameson Raid.
On letterhead of Morley's Hotel Trafalgar Square London WC. 24 March 1897. 1p. 12mo. In good condition with slight spotting to extremities laid down on leaf removed from autograph album. 'I am sorry that we have missed each other on the occasions you have called. My time is much occupied & it is difficult to fix an hour before 6 P.M. on Sunday when if you can manage to call once more I shall be delighted to see you & revive our mutual recollections of old days.' According to Schreiner's entry in the Oxford DNB 'During the closure of the Vaal River drifts in 1895 he helped to commit the Cape to possible war by drafting the ultimatum to the Transvaal republic; but he was appalled by the Jameson raid later that year and soon afterwards broke finally with Rhodes. Although he opposed ending the British South Africa Company's charter he chaired the Cape select committee which condemned Rhodes's conduct. In 1897 he gave evidence at the raid inquiry in London.' Reads: ‘Dear Miss Cond / I have pleasure in sending you my signature. As you will see it is quite an ordinary one. / Yours very truly / William Plomer’. The signature is in fact rather stylish in an understated way and the underlining has two small curls in it. In ink on otherwise-blank reverse by someone who misread the signature: 'William Ploms'. Boston: Houghton Miffin 1903. These are two very good hardcover volumes bound in full red morocco one with five raised bands on the spine the other with four raised bands decorated in gilt. We offer both volumes together as they are both first editions and both were bound in fine red leather bindings by the reknowned Holzer Bindery Boston. The bindings have gilt circular devices on their front covers and bookplates on their inside front covers identifying them as having been awarded as prizes by the Latin School Boston in the years 1913 and 1915. Both volumes were given to the same individual. Both bookplates signed in ink by the Rector of the school. Additionally all page edges are gilt. The spines and edges of the red leather bindings are darkened. Completely clean inside. The Hill Towns of Italy was published in October 1903. The Plain Towns of Italy was published in October 1911. Both are first editions. Both volumes are completely clean inside and are illustrated in black & white with Alinari photographs of Italian buildings and streets. Both volumes contain double-page color maps: the Hill Towns is of Central Italy; and the Plain Towns is of Upper Italy. Both volumes are stamped Holzer Binder Boston in gilt on the rear board inside lower edge. Both volumes with different red and gray marbled endpapers. 8" high X 6" wide 398 & 603 pages. Two nice first editions in fine bindings by the Holzer Bindery. Heavy books foreign shipping will be extra. This set will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking. . His study convinced him that the valleys had not developed because of separation as most geologists thought but were the result of "ramping" caused by compression and vertical movement" ANB.
