His intent was to produce drawings that he could later use as the basis for the paintings and lithographs to sell to the public. Egypt was much in vogue at this time and travellers collectors and lovers of antiquities were keen to buy works inspired by the East or depicting the great monuments of ancient Egypt.<br> Roberts made a long tour in Egypt Nubia the Sinai the Holy Land Jordan and Lebanon. Throughout he produced a vast collection of drawings and watercolour sketches.<br> On his return to Britain Roberts worked with lithographer Louis Haghe from 1842 to 1849 to produce these lavishly illustrated plates. He funded the work through advance subscriptions which he solicited directly. The scenery and monuments of Egypt and Holy Land were fashionable but had hitherto been hardly touched by British artists and so Roberts quickly accumulated 400 subscription commitments with Queen Victoria being subscriber No. 1. In the foreground are reeds and a sailboat behind which can be seen in near silhouette the Temple of Isis on the island. Philae was accounted to be one of the burying-places of Osiris and was held in high reverence both by the Egyptians to the north and the Nubians to the south. It was deemed profane for any but priests to dwell there and was accordingly sequestered and denominated "the Unapproachable." This is a view now un-viewable to modern eyes. Due to decades of constant flooding of Philae after the construction of the Aswan Low Dam every building was dismantled into about 40000 units and then transported to higher ground on the nearby island of Agilkia. This is an especially attractive plate showing the northern portico of one of the best preserved temples in Egypt at a time when most of the portico was still buried beneath shifting desert sand. Three winged sun disc are visible above the opening the lower of which is brightly painted. The temple dedicated to the falcon god Horus was built in the Ptolemaic period between 237 and 57 BC. A group of brightly dressed visitors appearing tiny between the massive columns lend an excellent sense of scale to this fine image.<br> We have a good number of impressive images from the Standard Folio Edition of this classic work available for purchase. Philae was accounted to be one of the burying-places of Osiris and was held in high reverence both by the Egyptians to the north and the Nubians to the south. It was deemed profane for any but priests to dwell there and was accordingly sequestered and denominated "the Unapproachable." This is a view now un-viewable to modern eyes. Due to decades of constant flooding of Philae after the construction of the Aswan Low Dam every building was dismantled into about 40000 units and then transported to higher ground on the nearby island of Agilkia.
