‎RARE ÉDITION ORIGINALE. Édition originale de ce récit franciscain consacré aux lieux saints. L’auteur, Jacques-Florent Goujon (1621–1693), religieux de l’Observance de Saint-François, dit avoir effectué deux séjours en Terre Sainte (1636 et 1666) et organiser son propos sous forme d’un itinéraire en vingt-trois “visites”, les dernières conduisant jusqu’en Égypte. L’ouvrage mêle description topographique et dévotionnelle (sanctuaires, itinéraires de pèlerinage, pratiques), avec un appareil iconographique gravé qui accompagne le parcours, notamment par une carte générale de la Terre Sainte et des vues de sites. Scarce First edition of this Franciscan account devoted to the sacred sites of the Holy Land. The author, Jacques-Florent Goujon (1621–1693), an Observant Franciscan, reports two journeys to the region (1636 and 1666) and structures the book as an itinerary in twenty-three “visits”, the final sections extending to Egypt. The text combines historical and devotional description (shrines, routes, pilgrimage practices) with a set of engraved illustrations that accompany the route, notably a general map of the Holy Land and views of key sites.‎

‎Édition originale, important récit publié par Frédéric Goupil-Fesquet, élève de Paul Delaroche et proche d’Horace Vernet, retraçant le voyage effectué en Orient (Égypte, Syrie, Palestine, Turquie) en compagnie du célèbre peintre. L’ouvrage est remarquable par ses descriptions vivantes des sites visités, mais surtout par son intérêt historique : Goupil-Fesquet fut l’un des premiers à utiliser la photographie naissante lors de ce voyage (dès 1839), ce qui en fait un témoignage pionnier sur l’introduction du daguerréotype en Orient. Mélange de récit artistique, archéologique et scientifique, ce texte illustre l’attrait romantique pour l’Orient et la volonté de documenter par l’image des monuments et paysages jusqu’alors connus seulement par la gravure. Rare complete work. The Text volume appeared in 1972 as volume LII of the Bibliothèque d'Études. It provides the text volume of a joint Cairo-Brooklyn undertaking and is scarce since years. The Brooklyn Museum published the Plate volume two years later as volume VII in the Wilbour Monographs. [ADDED:] Copy of the rare extended Corrigenda list to the Text Volume, listing 23 corrections and revisions to the "Commentaire et Notes à la Traduction" section. It was issued separately two years after the publication of the book and is of considerable importance to the correct reading of the text though practically no longer available. [ALSO ADDED:] In 1982, Dieter Kurth published an extended review of Goyon's book with a long list of faults and omissions in the Plates Volume as well as an extended list of comments on entries in the Text Volume. A copy of an offprint of this important review is herewith added.‎
