‎Sie Geschichte des Ptolemäerreiches erstreckt sich über die dreihundertjährige Epoche des Hellenismus vom Einmarsch Alexanders d. Gr. bis zum tragischen Ende von Antonius und Kleopatra VII. (332-30 v. Chr.). Von ihrer Basis in Ägypten aus errichteten die ersten drei Ptolemäer im 3. Jh. v. Chr. das mächtigste Reich im Ostmittelmeerraum, das sich von der Großen Syrte in Libyen über Palästina und Syrien, Zypern, die kleinasiatischen Küstenländer bis Thrakien erstreckte und sowohl in der Ägäis als auch am Roten Meer bis zur Straße von Bab el-Mandeb zahlreiche Stützpunkte unterhielt. Ab 200 v. Chr. gingen viele der asiatischen und europäischen Besitzungen wieder verloren: Dennoch konnte durch geschickte Diplomatie in Verbindung mit Rom die ptolemäische Dynastie länger als die anderen hellenistischen Herrscherhäuser überleben. Der Erfolg der Ptolemäer im Inneren beruhte zum großen Teil auf ihrer Ideologiepolitik: Sie setzten die Reihe der Pharaonen fort und übernahmen deren religiöse Verpflichtungen, andererseits gelang es ihnen, die führenden Kreise des Reiches im hellenistischen Herrscher- und Dynastiekult an sich zu binden. Mehrere Wissenschaften beschäftigen sich mit dem Ptolemäerreich. Klima und Bodenbeschaffenheit haben eine unglaubliche Fülle von Quellen - viele erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten entdeckt - auf uns kommen lassen, die eine Revision vieler überkommener Ansichten erforderlich machen.
