With 12 line engraved plates and a fold out map depicting Egypt and Arabia Petraea Transjordan. Volume I. is from a later printing of the 10th editiondated 1844 and volume II. is from the 11th edition dated 1854. Note: the 10th edition was first published in 1839. Both volumes are the same size and uniformly bound in panel stamped dark gray/brown publisher�s cloth. The bindings are tight with only minor spots of rubbing. Volume I. is bound with only two of the eight plates usually found in other editions of the first volume. Volume II. contains the standard 10 plates. These volumes were possibly remainders from two different editions which the publishing house had bound uniformly minus 6 plates from volume I. including the frontispiece. Interior contains occasional spots of marginal foxing. End papers are foxed. Several leaves are unopened/uncut. A large chip in the outer margin of p. 147 volume I is neatly patched. Some marginal damp-staining is present towards the end of volume I. John Lloyd Stephens 1802-1852 was an American lawyer and traveler perhaps best known for his travels in Central America. In 1836 Stephens visited the Levant Egypt and the Transjordan region. He recounts his visits and encounters in Alexandria Cairo Thebes Karnak Sinai Petra Gaza Hebron Jerusalem the Dead Sea Nazareth Tyre etc. His two volume work includes a number of simple but detailed line engraved plates depicting the ruins at Petra as well as views of Mt.
