‎Die vor über 150 Jahren begonnene Sammlung ägyptischer Altertümer der Leipziger Universität wird zwar nicht in einem Atemzug mit jenen der großen Museen altägyptischer Kunst und Kultur genannt; dennoch gehört zu ihrem Fundus eine ganze Reihe bedeutender, zum Teil weltweit einmaliger Stücke. Dazu zählen etwa ein Ensemble außerordentlich qualitätvoll gearbeiteter Steingefäße der Frühzeit (um 3000 v. Chr.), einige auch dem Erhaltungszustand her bemerkenswerten Statuen von Privatleuten des Alten Reichs ( um 2350 v. Chr.), zwei einzigartige bronzene Schalenuntersätze aus der Zeit des Neuen Reichs (um1450 v. Chr.), der in überaus feiner Weise aus Zedernholz geschnitzte Sarg des Hedbastiru (um 400 v. Chr.) und vieles mehr. Von den insgesamt 600 in der ständigen Ausstellung zu sehenden Objekten ? das sind etwa ein Zehntel des Gesamtbestandes ? wurden bisher nur wenige mit guten Abbildungen publiziert. Deuxième édition de ces Mémoires assez surprenants, même quand on intègre l'oeuvre de teinturier de Grandin (la première est de 1838). Il semble que la part de l'invention dépasse largement et dilue la base sans doute assez mince qui a servi de départ à la rédaction. Certes, Elie Krettly (1775-1840) a existé et servi sur toute la période impériale, mais, en l'absence (habituelle) de manuscrit ou de notes autographes pour ce genre de publication, il est impossible de faire le départ de ce qui lui revient et de ce qui est attribuable à l'imagination de Grandin‎

Endpapers foxed, some sporadic foxing inside, else a nice copy in a very good condition. ~ First edition. Extremely rare. Kristensen's original doctoral thesis ("Egyptian Ideas about the Hereafter in Connection with the Gods Re and Osiris"). Lithographed in its entirety from the manuscript. Willem Brede Kristensen (1867-1953). Dutch orientalist and anthropologist of Norwegian origin. He was professor for the History of Religion at the Leiden University(1901-37) and made a special study of ancient religions and anthropology, including Egyptian beliefs. He also studied Sanskrit, Hebrew, Avestian, Phoenician and Egyptian. Kristensen's work and thought were very influential and he is considered by some as "the father of many scholars in the fields of Egyptology and comparative religion i.e. De Buck, Van der Leeuw, Bleeker, and Zandee. His most well known work was "Life out of Death" (published in Dutch as "Het leven uit den dood", 1926). His collected lectures were published as "The Meaning of Religion: Lectures in the Phenomenology of Religion" (1960).
