Dynastie bis zum Ende der Römerzeit vorbehalten. Mit den Königen von Tanis begann der allmähliche Niedergang Ägyptens, der sich eineinhalb Jahrtausende lang hinzog. Er war aber nicht gleichbedeutend mit einem kulturellen Abstieg. Ägypten erlebte immer wieder kulturelle Aufschwünge, ja regelrechte Renaissancen, etwa in der Kuschiten- und später in der Saitenzeit. Darüber hinaus gelang es den Ägyptern, allen eindringenden Feinden zum Trotz, sich ihre Eigenart zu bewahren. In ihren künstlerischen Äußerungen hielten sie sich nicht nur an traditionelle Formen, sie griffen auch alte Stile wieder auf. Zunehmend erkannten sie andererseits den Reiz neuer, von außen herangetragener Formen, die sie mit Althergebrachtem verschmolzen. Lange Zeit konnte ihre Kultur weithin ausstrahlen.
