‎Dr. Traugott Ludwig betrieb in Alexandria eine kleine pharmazeutische Fabrik, die 1882 bei der Beschießung Alexandrias durch die Briten zerstört wurde. Der Sohn der Familie, Abdallah Ludwig, diente später als Offizier im bayerischen Heer. Das Photo zeigt einen selbstbewußten Herrn mit sorgfältig gestutzten Vollbart, der ein - im Photo koloriertes - Couleurband trägt. - Der Photograph, Luigi Fiorillo (1847-1898), hatte sich um 1870 in Alexandria niedergelassen. Nach seinem Tod führte sein Sohn die Firma noch bis ca.1920 weiter. - Photo mit Knitterspuren, Karton und Photo an der rechten unteren Ecke mit Knickspur, sonst noch gut erhalten.‎

‎St. Paul is generally considered the first Christian hermit, and the monastery built around his cave in Egypt is one of the very oldest. This sumptuous volume grew out of a conservation project of the monastery's superb wall paintings, which were broadly produced in two phases in the 13th and 18th centuries.The Coptic Monastery of St. Paul by the Red Sea grew up around the cave where Paul, the first Christian hermit, lived in solitude. The cave served as a shrine in late antiquity, became a church in the middle ages, and expanded again in the early modern period. This visually and intellectually exciting book chronicles the history of a series of devotional paintings in the Cave Church. It explores how the monastic community commissioned painting twice in the church in the 13th century, during one of the greatest eras of Coptic art, and how one of the monks painted it again in the 18th century, helping to inaugurate a Coptic renaissance after centuries of decline. The foundation of this volume is a wall painting conservation project sponsored by the American Research Center in Egypt. The book also sets the art and architecture of the Cave Church in its historical context and examines the role of the Monastery of St. Paul as part of the sacred geography of Christian Egypt through time. Eine Beschäftigung mit dem Kino dürfte für die Kulturgeschichtsschreibung in Ägypten wertvolle Einsichten vermitteln, da Film und Kino als Forschungsgegenstände insbesondere einer interdisziplinär ausgerichteten Kulturwissenschaft neue und fruchtbringende Horizonte eröffnen. Den unüberschätzbaren Stellenwert dieses Mediums sowohl im interkulturellen wie interdisziplinären Forschungsgebiet hat der ungarische Filmtheoretiker Bela Balazs bereits in den 1920er Jahren erkannt, als er schrieb: "Der Film hat in der Phantasie und im Gefühlsleben der städtischen Bevölkerung die Rolle übernommen, die früher einmal Mythen, Legenden und Volksmärchen gespielt haben, [so daß] man von nun an nie mehr eine Kulturgeschichte oder Völkerpsychologie wird schreiben dürfen, ohne ein großes Kapitel dem Film zu widmen." Tatsächlich stellt das ägyptische Kino seit Mitte der 1930er Jahre in der gesamten arabischen Welt einen ganz eigenartigen Kosmos dar, der auf seine zentrale Stellung als Ort kultureller Imagination hinweist. Muhammad cAbd al-Wahhab etwa, der in seinem eleganten Anzug und schief sitzendem Tarbusch zu der weißen Rose in seiner Hand singt, oder die Tänzerin Ta-heyya Karioka in glitzerndem Abendkleid prägten die Kindheitserinnerungen einer ganzen Generation vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg und schafften alsbald ein arabisches Pendant zu den "mythes de la vie quotidienne", die Roland Barthes für das Frankreich der 1950er Jahre entziffert hatte. Ob in Tunis, Kairo, Jaffa oder Bagdad, täglich lauschte ein großes Publikum in dunklen Sälen vor funkelnden Bildern dem Gesang Umm Kultums oder des Geschwisterpaares Farid al-'Atras und Ismahän, lachte über den feinen Humor Nagib al-Rihanis oder die Grimassen Ismäil Yasins und weinte über die unglückliche und unerfüllte Liebe der Leinwandhelden und -heldinnen. Aber auch in Hinsicht auf eine ästhetische Erfahrung von Modernität schlechthin dürfte das Kino zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts ein wichtiger und zentraler Ort gewesen sein.
