Berman, Lawrence
THE PRIEST, THE PRINCE, AND THE PASHA The Life and Afterlife of an Ancient Egyptian Sculpture
Lower corners bumped. Minor shelfwear . ; Sometime in the early fourth century BC, an unknown Egyptian master carved an exquisite portrait in dark-green stone. The statue that included this head of a priest, likely a citizen of ancient Memphis, may have been damaged when the Persians conquered Egypt in 343 BC, before it was buried in a temple complex. Its adventures were not over: after almost two millennia, the head was excavated by Auguste Mariette, a founding figure in French archaeology. Sent to France as part of a collection assembled for the inimitable Bonaparte prince known as Plon-Plon, it found a home in his faux Pompeian palace. After disappearing again, it resurfaced in the collection of American aesthete Edward Perry Warren, who donated it to the MFA, Boston. Along the way, this compelling, mysterious sculpture has reflected the evolving understanding of Egyptian art. ; 8.4 X 6.1 X 0.9 inches; 208 pages

Gutes Ex.; der farb. illustr. Einband stw. leicht berieben. - Englisch. - INHALT : Foreword ----- Acknowledgments ----- Introduction ----- A Short History of the Louvre's Department of Egyptian Antiquities ----- The Image of the King in Ancient Egypt ----- Dynasties and Rulers ----- Map ----- Catalogue ----- Documentation. // ... The works in the exhibition are all masterpieces of Egyptian art. Spanning the entire history of Egyptian civilization, they range in date from 3000 BC to AD 68. Not just a show of masterworks, the exhibition is designed to give a focused view of the changes and continuity in Egyptian art through royal imagery. It also provides fascinating insights into the changing concept of the pharaoh over time. Looking at and understanding these works brings many artistic and social/ political issues to the fore and makes the exhibition a significant exploration for the eye and the mind. The presentation is designed to capture both the powerful spirit of the objects and the historical imagination of the audience. ... (Vorwort) ISBN 0940717328
