‎Vom Untergang des Römischen Reiches bis ins 18. Jahrhundert war das >alte Ägyptern nur wenig mehr als ein Mythos. Das änderte sich im Jahre 1798, als mit der Expedition Napoleons auch 167 Wissenschaftler und andere Fachgelehrte nach Ägypten zogen, um die alten Baudenkmäler zu erforschen, zu vermessen und aufzunehmen. Die ersten fünfzig Jahre des 19. Jahrhunderts standen ganz im Zeichen des Entdeckerrausches: in Frankreich erschien die Description de l'Egypte, das erste große Werk der Ägyptologie, der Italiener Giovanni Belzoni fand den Eingang zur Chephrenpyramide und entdeckte den Felsentempel Ramses II. in Abu Simbel, Jean Francois Champollion gelang es, die Hieroglyphen zu entschlüsseln, der Deutsche Richard Lepsius legte das berühmte Labyrinth von Hawara frei. Ägyptische Antiquitäten wurden zu Hunderten nach Paris und London verschifft. In Musen oder Ausstellungen der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht, erregten und beflügelten sie die Phantasie der Massen. Das alte Ägypten wurde wiederentdeckt und bestaunt wie ein unbekannter Kontinent voller Wunder. Nicht nur Abenteurer und Entdecker, auch Maler, Architekten und Schriftsteller zog es unwiderstehlich an den Nil. Mit Stift und Feder hielten sie - oft unter großen persönlichen Strapazen - diese so faszinierend andere Welt in Bild und Worten fest. Zum Glück - denn viele Bauwerke waren schon Jahrzehnte später stark beschädigt oder gar völlig zerstört. Der erste Teil des Buches erzählt die Geschichte der Wiederentdeckung Ägyptens. Im zweiten Teil begleiten wir Künstler und Schriftsteller des 19. Jahrhunderts bei ihrer Reise auf dem Nil, von Alexandrien über Gizeh, Memphis, Saqqara und Luxor nach Karnak und ins Tal der Könige.
