Stanley to pastedown folding wood-engraved frontispiece folding map defective another example loosely inserted 12 full-page plates 23 further in-text illustrations; slightly later red half morocco gilt spine in six compartments with gilt morocco lettering piece marbled boards all edges speckled red housed in custom slipcase a handsome copy preserved as it was out of Stanley's library.<br /> An outstanding association copy linking the two greatest African explorers of the nineteenth century.<br /><br />This copy was first purchased by Shapero from the 2002 sale at Christie's of a collection of Henry Morton Stanley items in which the map was described as being defective. We have also handled Stanley's copy of Livingstone's Missionary Travels and that too had the map torn out. The maps in question would not have been available as separate publications or reproductions at the time so it is not impossible to imagine that it was Stanley himself who took these maps to use for planning his own expeditions.<br /> London, Murray, 1865. hardcover‎

Brown textured cloth exterior slightly faded and rubbed spine nicked; text is slightly toned but clean. First American edition of Livingstone’s account of his Zambezi expedition to examine the natural resources of southeastern Africa and to determine the navigability of the Zambezi River. He explored the Shire River a stream leading to Zambezi and discovered Lake Nyasa along with the Rovuma River and Lake Chilwa. The expedition met with many difficulties. The Zambezi turned out unnavigable past the Cabora Bassa rapids and in addition he lost his wife Mary to malaria. Livingstone became greatly concerned with the slave trade while exploring Lake Nyasa He encountered marches of manacled slaves and with the entire countryside devasted by warring and slave raiding made a great impact on him. Nevertheless some of the scientists on the expedition contributed collections of botanic ecological geological and ethnographic materials on their return home.<br /> <br /> David Livingstone 1813-1873 was one of the greatest of all African missionaries explorers and antislavery advocate. He made geographical discoveries for European knowledge inspired abolitionists of the slave trade revealed that the interior of the African continent was not an arid wasteland and provided new incentives for European colonization of Africa. Several discreet chops from former-owner and a stamp on the rear paste-down. There is light rubbing to the margins and the spine has darkened. While the lettering is readable it is a bit obscure.
