Map pictures the various products and industries of South Africa including textiles chemicals wines wool cattle gold diamonds timber tobacco tungsten copper and much more. Positioned above South Africa on the Atlantic side of the country is the Mandate of the Union of South Africa while positioned above South Africa on the Indian Ocean side of the map is Mozambique. Between these two is the Bechuanaland Protectorate. An inset map positions South Africa on the continent of Africa. The publication date of the map which is undated is ambiguous with dates of 1943 DavidRumsey.com 1946 and 1948 OCLC records 47943901 & 316611786 being found online. On the map the use of the future tense when referencing the end of the war "in four years of war it has reached.will form when hostilities have ceased." seemingly conflicts with text reading: "South Africa is to-day an arsenal and repair base of the Armies of the United Nations." The reference to "four years of war" suggests the date 1943 four years after 1939 while the United Nations reference might suggest a later date when the United Nations was officially ratified hence a "1943-1948" attribution. The United Nations Declaration dates from 1942 while text on the map refers to "four years of war" and South Africa as "an arsenal of the United Nations" suggesting a date of 1943. "South Africa is to-day an arsenal and repair base of the Armies of the United Nations.the Union has so accelerated her industrial production that in four years of war it has reached a figure which could not have been attained in peace-time in less than 25 years. The industries which have developed under the stress of war will form the basis of peace-time manufacture when hostilities have ceased." "Printed in England by Thos. Forman & Sons Ltd. Coloured lithographic map dissected into 20 panels and mounted on linen opening to 730 x 550 mm folding down into the original greyish-brown pebble-grained cloth boards neatly rebacked with paper label to front cover 198 x 124 mm. A little wear to corners and edges paper label lightly toned. In remarkably good condition. Extremely attractive and uncommon map highly useful in the interpretation of the campaign. James Wyld the younger had been educated at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich but joined his father's firm which specialised in maps of areas of topical interest such as a map of Afghanistan with notes and the routes of troops at the time of the First Anglo-Afghan War and maps of the Ottoman empire and Black Sea at the time of the Crimean War.
