Winter Journey Bibliography Index. - The Tarantas, a satirical account of a journey in a traveling cart from Moscow to Kazan around 1840, is the best-known work by the Russian writer Count Vladimir Sollogub (1813-82). It appeared at a time of heated debate between Slavophiles and Westernizers as to the direction Russia should take in her development, a debate which continues today. When first published, the work was promptly reviewed in the major periodicals and provoked heated controversy. The Tarantas stands out in Sollogub's production for its satirical presentation of the views of the two travelers - one, a young Western-educated aristocrat, the other, an older, traditional landowner. The famous liberal critic Vissarion Belinksy attacked The Tarantas as a pro-Slavophile work; others have seen it as a satire against Slavophilism. Little has been done over the years to put the work in proper perspective. William Edward Brown has now provided the first modern and complete translation of The Tarantas together with a detailed afterword and the first translation of a contemporary review by Yury Samarin. Professor Brown's translation and study of the work's genesis, structure, and historical background will finally give The Tarantas its proper place in literary history.
