Lorca, Federico Garcia
Romancero Gitan
Paris France: Marcel Lubineau Éditeur 1960. Limited Edition 1st Printing. Stiff Wrappers. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. En français sans texte auxiliaire en anglais. In French not in English. This is a livre d'artiste. Gravures de Grau-Sala. Printed September 5 1960 with typography by Pierre Bouchet and gravures by Manuel Robbe. Number 308 from a limited printing of 275 commercial copies from a total run of 350 copies numbered in Arabic numerals and 25 hors-commerce numbered in Roman numerals. French wrappers over loose folded sheets of watermarked Rives paper. 138 numbered pages as called for. Each page approx. 11 x 7.5 inches. Light foxing to the preliminaries. Occasional foxing to the internal pages; the gravures appear to be not much affected by foxing or spotting. Full-color frontispiece plus 14 double-page full-color prints. The double-page prints approx. 11 x 15 inches. Most are protected by onion-skin tissue guards. Of special note is that the artist Grau-Sala on the Justification du Tirage page has drawn a woman's head in blue ink signed by the artist and with the apparent date 1962. This appears to be an original drawing executed two years after publication. The French wrappers and Rives sheets protected by a sturdy off-white chemise with the title in gilt to the spine; then inserted into a medium-duty slipcase. The slipcase covered in patterned paper light gray on off-white. Slipcase with age-toning and with a 4 inch split at the top edge but holding fast. Altogether a copy in Very Good condition in a Very Good Chemise and a Good slipcase. 3 lbs. 4 oz. Emilio Grau Sala 1911-1975 was a Spanish painter. He studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Barcelona. With his wife Ãngeles Santos Torroella he fled to Paris at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. He was a famous colorist oil painting watercolor and pastel and illustrator. In the French Salon "Comparaisons" he was a member of the group of Maurice Boitel. Federico GarcÃa Lorca 1898-1936 was an accomplished Spanish poet and playwright. He achieved international recognition as an emblematic member of the Generation of '27 and spent time in New York and in Cuba. He was murdered by Nationalist forces at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War in the vicinity of Granada Spain. Cette edition a été achevée d' imprimer le 5 septembre 1960 par Pierre Bouchet pour la typographie et par Manuel Robbe pour les gravures. Bon état.

Marcel Lubineau, Éditeur unknown

LORCA, FEDERICO GARCIA and TERRY FROST
Selected poems of Federico Garcia Lorca. Prints by Terry Frost Eleven Poems by Federico Garcia Lorca illustrated with Eleven Etchings by Terry Frost
London: Austin/Desmond Contemporary Books October 1989 1989. Printer's proof limitation page marked "pp" and signed in pencil by Terry Frost. Eleven poems printed in Spanish and English on Velin Arches Blanc 270gsm paper folders 575x385mm. The title page is designed by Frost and printed by lithography. The colour etchings which are loosely inserted into the folders are printed on Somerset Satin 300gsm paper some hand-coloured by Frost. All are signed in pencil by Frost and marked "pp". Housed in a black cloth covered Solander box designed by the artist. Issued in an edition of seventy-five. Printed in collaboration with Terry Frost at the Print Centre London. Production and typography coordination by Gordon House and Hugh Stoneman. There was an hors de commerce edition of a further fifteen copies. A set of artist's proofs 4/10 is at the Tate. Some very slight marking to the box but otherwise this is a very good set in excellent condition. Terry Frost's etchings for this collection of Lorca's poems are a personal response to the poetry. Frost started to read Lorca in the 1970s and immediately he "was inspired by the poet's powerful visual imagery particularly his emotive descriptions of colour". Later Frost said of this discovery: "Lorca is so simple and so direct and so full of colour and ideas". And in the year Frost made these images he wrote: "I've been in love with Lorca's poetry for fifteen years". This beautiful vibrant collection represents a perfect intertwining of word and image. Also included in this collection is a single sheet from an artist's sketchbook 400x300mm of pen and ink and watercolour sketches of twelve human figures. On the verso an inscription reads "Nous sommes heureux de commencer cette nouvelle annee avec vous. affectueusement Menarl Chantil ". It is unsigned but the work is of a high standard with a true artist's feeling for the movement of the body. Ten of the figures are shown standing with two sitting on stools and they are gesticulating and posing as though acting or public speaking. The faces are indistinct and the heads are drawn using a spiral motif which appears elsewhere on the sheet presumably where the artist intended to draw other figures. We have not been able to establish the artist although there is the possibility that it is Terry Frost himself. Although he is best known as an abstract artist he was an accomplished draughtsman and the spiral appears frequently in his work. This book was sold with the sheet of drawings by an art dealer in Cornwall which was where Frost spent much of his life and career as a central figure in the St Ives School. London: Austin/Desmond Contemporary Books October 1989 hardcover

Lorca, Federico Garcia [Leonard Cohen]
The Poet In New York and Other Poems.
New York: W.W. Norton & Company 1940. First edition of Lorca’s masterpiece. Octavo original cloth. Signed by fellow poet Leonard Cohen on the front free endpaper. Cohen was deeply influenced by the work of Lorca for the duration of his poetic and musical career. "Now you know of my deep association and confraternity with the poet Federico Garcia Lorca. I could say that when I was a young man an adolescent and I hungered for a voice I studied the English poets and I knew their work well and I copied their styles but I could not find a voice. It was only when I read even in translation the works of Lorca that I understood that there was a voice. It is not that I copied his voice; I would not dare. But he gave me permission to find a voice to locate a voice that is to locate a self a self that is not fixed a self that struggles for its own existence. As I grew older I understood that instructions came with this voice. What were these instructions The instructions were never to lament casually. And if one is to express the great inevitable defeat that awaits us all it must be done within the strict confines of dignity and beauty" Leonard Cohen. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Translated by Rolfe Humphries. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. A unique example most rare and desirable signed by Cohen. Federico García Lorca’s Poet in New York is an astonishing depiction of a tumultuous metropolis that changed the course of poetic expression in both Spain and the Americas. Written during Lorca’s nine months at Columbia University at the beginning of the Great Depression Poet in New York is widely considered one of the most important books Lorca produced. This influential collection portrays a New York City populated with poverty racism social turbulence and solitude—a New York intoxicating in its vitality and beauty. W.W. Norton & Company hardcover
