ANTOLOGIA Seleccion y Prologo de Maria Zambrano
Santiago Chile: Editorial Panorama 1937. First Edition Thus. The second edition of this collection but first by this publisher and first produced with the publisher’s wish that it be considered a small memorial to the author who had only recently been killed. Small 8vo original printer’s wrappers lettered in black and red in glassine. 81 pp. A well preserved copy the paper used in producing it prone to toning the wrappers with a few minor closed tears but with no loss wear and splitting at the spine. Lorca was presumed shot by Nationalist militia a year prior to this publication only days after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. A poet prose writer dramatist and artist Lorca had won international recognition with the influential group of poets that arose in Spanish literary circles between 1923 and 1927 essentially out of a shared desire to experience and work with avant-garde forms of art and poetry. His experiences traveling through impoverished rural Spain and New York particularly amongst the disenfranchised African American population transformed him into a passionate advocate of the theatre of social action. ROMANCERO GITAN Traduction par Paul Verdevoye Precedee D’Une Etude Sur L’Homme et L’Oeuvre Par Jean Camp
Paris: La Nouvelle Edition 1945. Second edition thus one year after the first. WITH A SIGNED PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION BY THE EDITOR JEAN CAMP. Printed in blue. Small 4to publisher’s original printed wrappers in glassine. 95 pp. A very good copy with only a bit of minor expected wear to the delicate paper wrappers and toning to the paper as is typical. It consists of eighteen ballads each of the poems have something in common dealing with Gypsy culture . It reflects the pains of a persecuted people living on the fringe of society and finding itself pursued by the representatives of authority and their struggle against this repressive authority. This struggle would be echoed in Garcia Lorca’s own life he was presumed killed by anti-Communist forces just days after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. A unique copy inscribed by the editor Jean Camp. Camp also provides essay on Garcia Lorca and his work which is not included in the earlier Spanish or English editions. La Nouvelle Edition unknown
