‎THE 1780 RESTORATION OF TRADE ACT "An Act to allow the exportation of provisions goods wares and merchandize from Great Britain to certain towns ports or places in North America which are or may be under the protection of His Majesty's arms; . .‎

‎London: Charles Eyre and William Strahan 1780. Title page pp. 691-696.  Folio.  First edition.  Printed on laid paper.  Disbound from larger volume. "An Act to allow the exportation of provisions goods wares and merchandize from Great Britain to certain towns ports or places in North America which are or may be under the protection of His Majesty's arms; and from such towns ports or places to Great Britain and other parts of His Majesty's dominions." The effect of this act was to amend the American Prohibitory Act of 1776 to to allow the resumption of trade betwenn Britain and those parts of the American colonies that remained under British control. The Prohibitory Act had been the final straw that led to the American Revoltion but if Parliament thought the 1780 revisions would reverse British fortunes in the colonies they would be disappointed: The Restoration of Trade Act was too little and too late. The document is in very good condition: clean and bright with 4 tiny bookworm holes in bottom margins--well away from the text. First Edition. Paper. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Manuscript. Charles Eyre and William Strahan Paperback‎

‎The History and Antiquities of the Cathedral Church of Hereford. With biographical Anecdotes of eminent Persons connected with the Establishment. SMALL PAPER EDITION IN ORIGINAL BOARDS‎

‎Longman Rees Orme Brown & Green 1831. 4to. with engraved frontispiece engraved and printed titles the latter with woodcut vignette 15 engraved plates and an engraved plan some minor foxing as usual rather heavier on frontispiece and engraved title text remarkably clean; ORIGINAL BOARDS UPPER BOARD WITH PRINTED PAPER LABEL uncut expertly rebacked to style with new paper label a very good bright crisp copy of a scarce work. The thirteenth and penultimate volume of Britton's informative and well-researched cathedral histories famous also for their accurate and highly detailed plates especially those by Mackenzie none in this volume and Le Keux. The histories were issued first in parts then as single volumes as here and finally in a collected edition. Bibliographical description is complicated further by the fact that each history appeared in up to five states of issue. THIS IS THE SMALL PAPER EDITION OF ONE OF THE SCARCEST IN THE SERIES. IT WAS PROBABLY BOUND EARLY FROM LATE PARTS SINCE THE GENERALLY ACCEPTED DATE OF PUBLICATION OF THE SINGLE VOLUME IS 1834. VERY SCARCE IN THE PUBLICHER'S BOARDS. ‎A New Guy Fawkes Speech‎

‎1829. London 1829. 9-3/4" x 7-1/2. London 1829. 9-3/4" x 7-1/2" "Kind Folks You See Our Effigy Designed for Guy Fawkes; Who With Base Mind Was Once Inclin'd to Give King James Hard Knocks" Broadside. Guy Fawkes Day. A New Guy Fawkes Speech. London: E. Billing 186 Bermondsey Street c.1840. 9-3/4" x 7-1/2" broadside. Six-stanza verse text within woodcut typographical border first four stanzas in two columns separated by woodcut rules below headline and vignette of a group of people burning Fawkes in effigy. Light toning otherwise fine. A well-preserved rare item. $650. A celebratory broadside commemorating Guy Fawkes Day. Also known as Guy Fawkes Night Bonfire Night or Firework Night it is an English national holiday commemorating the failed Gunpowder Plot an attempt by a group of Catholics to assassinate King James I by blowing up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament. The plot was foiled when Fawkes was discovered with a cache of explosives hidden beneath the House of Lords. The date of our broadside is conjectured from a similar broadside by Billing with a contemporary handwritten date of 1829 held by the National Library of Scotland. The verses on that copy end with "God save the King." Ours ends with "God save the Queen" so we assume it was printed in the early years of Queen Victoria's reign which began in 1837. OCLC locates no copies. unknown‎

‎1851. London 1851: Printed for P.C. London 1851: Printed for P.C. One of the Most Appalling Examples of the Sadistic Abuse of a Minor Broadside. Great Britain. Child Abuse. A Copy of Verses on the Trial & Conviction of Mr. & Mrs. Sloane for the Cruel Treatment of their Servant Girl Jane Wilbred. London: Printed for P.C. 1851. 9" x 7" verse broadside untrimmed mounted on paper. Main text in two columns separated by rules below boldface headline. Light soiling and a few minor creases and tears. $950. This broadside records one of the most appalling examples of child abuse in English history. Public outrage at this case was shared at all levels of society. The gratuitous truly unspeakable cruelties that George Sloane special pleader of the Middle Temple and officer of the Church of England Assurance Institute and his wife an ex-dancer at the Italian Opera inflicted for two years on their servant girl who was hired from the work-house at age 15 did not go unpunished. But the Sloanes received only a two-year prison sentence. Their mild punishment outraged the public. This event must have inspired several broadsides and related items but almost none are recorded in the standard sources. An account "taken from the Newcastle Papers" of 28th April during the miner's strike of 1832 an early example of Indsutrial-Era unrest that resonated throughout Great Britain. At that time a number of strikers evicted from their homes gathered in the town where they lit bonfires discharged firearms and antagonized their opponents. Errington a strikebreaker was found dead in the street with two wounds from a marble-firing musket. Several strikers were charged with his murder and taken to Durham Gaol which was far enough away from Newcastle to discourage any rescue attempts. ‎Browne, G. (George) Lathom.‎

‎The Life of Horatio, Lord Nelson.‎

‎Duodecimo. Pp. x, 181. With full-page maps and battle plans. Charming engraved vignette illustrations, often as tail-pieces. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's navy blue cloth, sides ornately embossed in blind, upper cover with naval illustration in gilt, spine decorated and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt; some wear to spine-ends, old signature to first flyleaf. In a very good condition. A clean, handsome copy. ~ Scarce. Published under the direction of the Committee of general literature and education, appointed by the Society for promoting Christian knowledge. George Lathom Browne (1815-1892) wrote "Nelson: The public and private life of Horatio, Viscount Nelson as told by himself, his comrades, and his friends" (1891); and "Wellington: or, the public and private life of Arthur, first Duke of Wellington, as told by himself, his comrades, and his intimate friends" (1889); as well as many books on public law. "No description of a man as he really is, surpasses that which is contained in the plain straightforward relation of his thoughts, feelings, acts, and intentions, in private letters designed for the perusal of those alone to whom they were addressed," he writes in the Preface to "The Life of Horatio". "The letters of Nelson are all evidently written for the correspondent alone (.) there the heart speaks rather than the head, and the man appears without disguise. From them the following sketch has been drawn: in no way pretending to a comparison with the beautiful narrative of Southey, but hoping to compensate for its inferiority in style by its greater correctness in facts."‎
