Blue cloth with blind embossed borders gold spine titles top edge gilt. Volume I; lxvi 274pp. Frontis map of Inverness a few B&W engravings. Volume II: xiv 350pp. A few B&W engrgravings. This is the 1876 reprinting of "Letters fromt a Gentleman in the North of Scotland to his Friend in London containing a description of a capital town in that northern country with an account of some uncommon customs of the inhabitants; likewise an account of the highlands with suctoms and manners of the Highlanders etc" first published in 1754. Burt was an officer of the Engineers who in 1730 was sent to Scotland to collect rent on the unsold forfeited estates after the 1715 uprising. He was based in Inverness and wrote these accounts in a series of letters. He published anonymously in 1754 and his book was met with a rush of criticism for presenting the Highlands as a backward and squalid area. He said for example that the houses were infested with rats and the coffe house looked like it had never been cleaned since the day it was built. He writes about anything that struck him: he describes Seals "the female has breasts like a woman that sometimes appears abe water which makes some to think it occasioned the fiction of a Mermaid" . In another case he describes women washing linien in tubs by the shore by hitching up their coats and stamping on the water-filled tubs of dirty linen with their bare feet. His accounts are an important source of information about Northern Scotland before the area was distorted by writings with a romantic bias. A heavy set. 3.6 JM LVR 200/4. Hardcover.
