Relation du voyage fait en Arménie et en Perse en 1805-1806 par l'interprète, orientaliste et diplomate Pierre-Amédée Emilien Jaubert. Élève d'Antoine-Isaac Silvestre de Sacy, Pierre-Amédée Emilien Jaubert (1779-1847) fut adjoint en 1798 à l'expédition d'Egypte comme premier secrétaire interprète : il traduisit les proclamations, la correspondance avec les chefs du pays, tous les discours, toutes les réponses du général en chef ; il rédigea les traités conclus par la République avec les peuples du Liban et les capitulations des places conquises. Nommé successivement en 1800 et 1801 secrétaire interprète du gouvernement et professeur de turc à l'école des langues orientales vivantes, il repartit en 1802 pour l'Orient avec le colonel Sebastiani puis en 1804 à Constantinople pour la négociation relative à la reconnaissance de Napoléon comme empereur par la Porte Ottomane. « Revenu après le succès, il reçut, au commencement de l'année suivante (1805), une mission en Perse, où il devait négocier un traité avec le chah. Arrêté près de Bayazid par le pacha de cette ville, et dépouillé des riches présents qu'il portait, il fut jeté au fond d'une citerne desséchée, où il resta prisonnier plus de quatre mois avec un fidèle serviteur. La mort du pacha spoliateur lui rendit la liberté. On lui remit ses présents, et après mille dangers, il put parvenir auprès d'Abbas-Mirza, héritier du trône de Perse, et enfin auprès de Feth-Ali-Chah, qui le reçut avec beaucoup de distinction, et s'entretint, dit-on avec lui sans interprète » (Hoefer). A la Restauration, Jaubert se consacre à l'étude et à l'enseignement. Il est élu membre de Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres en 1830. Il est professeur de persan au Collège de France en 1838, professeur de turc à l'Ecole des langues orientales, dont il devient directeur en 1838. ‎* In Armenian, English, French, Arabic, and Hebrew ----- Das Patriarchat von Jerusalem ist das Erzbistum von Jerusalem der Armenischen Apostolischen Kirche. Bis 1929 gehörten die armenischen Diözesen in Syrien, Libanon, Zypern und Ägypten zum Patriarchat Jerusalem; dann übernahm das Katholikat von Kilikien deren Betreuung. Das Patriarchat ist der Hüter der armenischen Heiligen Stätten in Jerusalem, zuständig für die Armenier-Gemeinschaft des Heiligen Landes und betreut die armenischen Pilger zur Heiligen Stadt. Patriarchalkathedrale ist die Jakobskirche im Armenischen Viertel der Jerusalemer Altstadt, wo der Schädel des Apostels Jakobus aufbewahrt wird (andere Reliquien dieses Jüngers Jesu werden in der Kathedrale von Santiago de Compostela verehrt). Die Armenier haben außerdem, neben zwei anderen christlichen Konfessionen, Anteil an der Grabeskirche, der heiligsten Stätte der Christenheit. Die Armenische Apostolische Kirche hat ferner die dortigen Rechte der Syrisch-Orthodoxen und der Koptischen Kirche anerkannt. Armenische Pilger und monastische Niederlassungen im Heiligen Land sind seit der Spätantike bezeugt. Das heutige Patriarchat entstand nach einer seit dem 18. Jahrhundert verbreiteten Deutung aus der Opposition der Jerusalemer Armenier gegen die romfreundlichen und latinisierenden Beschlüsse der Synode von Sis 1307 im Königreich Kleinarmenien. Bischof Sargis (Sarkis) von Jerusalem (Amtszeit 1281?1313) wurde, so heißt es, zum Katholikos der Armenier erhoben und erlangte 1311 die Anerkennung als Patriarch durch seinen Landesherrn, den Mameluken-Sultan Malik Nasr. Quellen für diese Behauptung fehlen. Trotz aller Reserviertheit gegenüber der Einigung der kilikischen Armenier mit Rom kam es im 14. Jahrhundert historisch nicht zu einem formalen Bruch zwischen Jerusalem einerseits und dem Katholikat von Sis sowie den armenischen Königen von Kleinarmenien anderseits. Im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert pflegte das Jerusalemer Patriarchat enge Beziehungen zum Katholikat von Kilikien und gelangte erst im 19. Jahrhundert unter die Jurisdiktion des ?Katholikos Aller Armenier? in Etschmiadsin. Wegen der Bedrängnisse der übrigen drei Zentren (Etschmiadsin, Konstantinopel/Istanbul, Sis/Antelias) bildete das Patriarchat in Jerusalem in den 1930er Jahren das inoffizielle Zentrum der armenischen Kirche.
