Lang, Andrew; et. al.
SOCIAL ENGLAND ILLUSTRATED. A COLLECTION OF XVIITH CENTURY TRACTS. AN ENGLISH GARNER.
pp. xxxii, 458. Printer's ornaments and initials taken from the early originals. 8vo. Original blue cloth bindings, lettered in gold. Manuscript ownership of: Edward S. Parsons, March 1905. An absolutely fascinating collection of scarce texts and tracts reprinted from Arber's 8-volume "English Garner" (1877-90) and re-edited by Thomas Seccombe, with new introductions by Andrew Lang (1844-1912), scholar, folk-lorist, poet, fairy tale author, and general man of letters). A wonderful glimpse of English life in the 17th century. It includes: "Of English Dogs" (1536); "Doctor John Dee" (1577); "Notes on Wines used in England" (1568); "The English Army Rations in the time of Queen Elizabeth" (1591), "Comments on the Secrets of Angling" (1653); and much, much more. These are very rare popular tracts. Really quite a remarkable collection. A very nice copy of the First American Edition. W55
