He concludes by stating that he is sorry to leave ‘dear Edinburgh’. In a postscript he states that ‘McLarens Sermon is the best Scotch Sermon I ever used! or heard & more worth sic than ten millions of “Scotch S. 1880â€. Agnes Strickland (1796-1874), Victorian historian and poet, whose best-known work is 'The Queens of England':
Agnes Strickland 1796-1874 Victorian historian. Autograph Letter Signed ‘Agnes Strickland / Historian of the Queens of England and Queens of Scotland’ stating her requirements for lodgings in Warwick during the ‘Archaeological Meeting’.
20 July 1864; Ipswich. See her entry in the Oxford DNB. 4pp 12mo. On bifolium In fair condition lightly aged with stub from mount adhering to the inner margin of the recto and obscuring a few words of text. The male recipient is not named: the letter is signed ‘Agnes Strickland / Historian of the Queens of England and Queens of Scotland’. By the advice of the publisher Daldy she is enquiring after ‘quiet comfortable lodgings at Warwick next Monday 25th till Tuesday August 2nd during the Archaeological Meeting in your antient historical town at which I have promised to be sent’. She gives the particulars of the ‘apartments’ she requires including ‘a wardrobe press or hanging closet for my dresses as I have a good deal of luggage. / I have a maid who will attend on me’. She does not know anyone in Warwick ‘except the Countess and not so familiarly as to apply to her about obtaining lodgings besides it would look like spelling for an inviation to the Castle’. It is Mrs Daldy who has furnished her with the recipient’s address ‘and suggested my consulting you on the subject’ and she apologises for ‘the freedom with which I have done so’. She ends with the Ipswich address at which she will be staying till the Monday. 20 July 1864; [Ipswich]. unknown

His recommendations pertaining to such matters as the prison location, plan and furnishings, the provision of adequate water supply, and prisoner's diet promoted hygiene and physical health.' In 1777, Howard's sister died, leaving him L15,000 and her house. He used this inheritance and the revenue from the sale of her house to further his work on prisons. By 1784, Howard calculated that he had travelled over 42,000 miles visiting prisons. His crusade and personal example greatly influenced reformers in the U.K. and the U.S. Evans 26543. PALIB 6

[3 Warenabbildungen]
