Henry Augustus Shute (1856-1943) was a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy (1875) and Harvard University (1879). He was born and lived in Exeter, New Hampshire, where he worked as a lawyer and a judge of the municipal court. Sometime in the 1890s, He began writing for the Exeter News-Letter. His weekly stories based on recollections from boyhood were popular, however, it was not until the publication of 'The Real Diary of a Real Boy' (1902) that Shute acquired national recognition. He went on to write nineteen other books and published extensively in the Saturday Evening Post (1925-1928). Called the "Mark Twain of New England," Shute's humorous, innocent, and 'jolly' stories continue to provide valuable insight into the customs of his time and place. Tasha Tudor later (1968) illustrated this charming New England Tale. HUMOR 8

Bouttats, titres rouge et noir. Première édition de la traduction française. Produite dans les milieux du refuge huguenot, cette traduction assura la diffusion européenne et le succès de ce livre. Très lu, réédité à plusieurs reprises, ce "catéchisme des républicains", constitua une source fondamentale de la pensée des Lumières comme des révolutionnaires de 1789. Algernon Sidney y étudie avec précision les mécanismes du pouvoir personnel, expose ses vues sur la nécessaire liberté politique des Nations et argumente autour de la primauté d’un parlement représentatif sur l’exécutif. Impliqué dans un complot contre Charles II d’Angleterre, l’auteur a été décapité pour trahison en 1683 et son ouvrage ne fut publié en anglais qu'à titre posthume en 1698. To Which Is Added, An Account Of The Author's Life And A Copious Index." Written as an answer to Sir Robert Filmer's 'Patriarcha' this is one of the earliest modern statements of republican ideals. Sidney proposes a doctrine of natural justice and governmental order from which all institutions vary at their peril. He asserted that a king's authority is granted by parliament, which has the additional power to depose him - a very controversial idea during the Restoration period. Many of the founders were influenced by the text. Thomas Jefferson described it as ".probably the best elementary book of the principles of government, as founded in natural right which has ever been published in any language; and it is much to be desired in such a government as ours that it should be put into the hands of our youth as soon as their minds are sufficiently matured for that branch of study." First printed in 1591, Astrophel and Stella is an English sonnet sequence containing 108 sonnets and 11 songs. The name derives from the two Greek words, 'aster' (star) and 'phil' (lover), and the Latin word 'stella' meaning star. Thus Astrophel is the star lover, and Stella is his star. Some have suggested that the love represented may be a literal one as Sidney evidently connects Astrophel to himself and Stella to Penelope Rich, the wife of a courtier, Robert Rich, 3rd Baronet.
