Smiles, Samuel.
THE LIFE OF GEORGE STEPHENSON AND OF HIS SON ROBERT STEPHENSON; Comprising Also A History of the Invention and Introduction of the Railway Locomotive. With Portraits and Numerous Illustrations
pp. 501 (4) [Publisher's advertisements]. Well illustrated with woodcuts. 8vo. Some age stain, but nothing horrid. Original full cloth binding, worn at extremities. An important and popular American edition of this biography of George Stephenson (1781-1848), and his son Robert (1803-1859). The father was one of the inventors founders of the modern railway, having built and operated the first steam locomotive and track system in the world at a British colliery. His son, an engineer, managed his father's Newcastle Locomotive Works; helped design and construct locomotives with his father; and was also renowned for the bridges he constructed.According to preface, this is a revised edition written ten years after the first (1857), primarily to report the "extraordinary progress" in railway construction all over the world since that date. It is quite a remarkable work that deserves greater attention. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W138
