The spine has four false raised bands with gilt decoration and additional gilt decoration at the head and tail of the spine. Spine also has gilt title "Chapel Services". Owner's name in gilt to front cover. Very light shelf wear to edges and corners. King's Chapel is the oldest church in America with continuous weekly worship services. Its liturgy is a unique hybrid that reflects this history largely based upon the 1662 English Book of Common Prayer . London: Printed by George E. Eyre and William Spottiswoode n.d. c. 1867. Psalms with separate title page and register. Unpaginated. Collates as: A-F in 16s G 4 leaves. Psalms printed within rules with headpiece. A few pages with scattered light foxing. Otherwise the pages are bight and clean and free from marking soiling or staining. All page edges brightly gilt. Bound in contemporary full black pebble grained morocco with triple blind rules to covers. Front cover with gilt title. Spine with five compartments separated by false raised bands. Spine ends chipped and extremities lightly worn. Front cover professionally reattached with reversible Japanese tissue. An clean and attractive copy of this extremely rare proof copy of the Evangelical proposal for revision of the English BCP. During the last half of the 19th Century there was resurgence of Anglo-Catholic practice in the Church of England. Some clergy incorporated liturgical forms from the medieval Sarum rite or contemporary Roman Catholic rites and several Anglo-Catholic devotionals were published for use by Anglo-Catholic clergy. In response several Evangelicals proposed reforms to the Book of Common Prayer. A Royal Commission on Ritual was appointed in 1867 which produced four reports over the following three years. Heavy wear and rubbing scored and bumped circular marks to upper board. Gatherings not flush only traces of earlier gilt edge stain from second/ later binder's trimming. Off-setting from book label now removed to front endpapers. Later affectionate gift POI in brown ink to second blank: "To Dorothy with love from Phyllis" with earlier POI again in brown ink repeated to illustrated title page and Contents page: "Jas. Nunn Chalck." Browned some foxing and staining losses to bottom corner of A2 with 4 lines of text absent and top corner of A7 some tears nicking and creasing a number of margins trimmed very close with headers and catchwords affected incl. gathering I L & X plus B in second work leaves P3 & 4 taped at centre fold with attendant offsetting to adjacent pages. Ownership inscription 'Mrs Banks formerly Miss Ann Truman See Remarks on Mortality at the other end of this Book' to front free end-paper; 'Ethel Louise Maggs from my Aunt Mrs Rehnworth Nov 10th 104' to facing end-paper; printed extract on mortality pasted to end accompanied by leaf of manuscript commentary recalling a conversation between a Sophie Banks and Mrs Banks in 1834 who discussed the extract 'in a very clear audible manner' and then pasted it into this book before 'expiring a few hours afterwards'. Loss to head of spine corners bumped small areas of rubbing to boards. Contents clean a bright. A very good copy. An almost miniature authorised Book of Common Prayer which records a remarkable encounter between two women. Pasted to one of the final end-papers is a short extract from a newspaper on mortality taken from a sermon recorded in the Boston Gazette. On the next leaf is a short manuscript account from the nineteenth-century recalling a Mrs Banks likely the Mrs Banks n�e Truman whose initials are tooled to the binding on her deathbed reading the passage aloud to a Miss Sophie Banks before declaring that she would paste it in her prayer book. The manuscript authors supposes that Mrs Banks must have 'lost no time' in doing so as she died the morning after on 11 February 1834. The last record of what may have been its owners dying act which intimately shows a passage of sermonising being taken from print to an oral discussion between two women to its final resting place pasted to the end of this volume. The book's former owner Prince Gregory was gentleman of the Chapel Royal from 1740 to 1755 DNB William Gregory. The Gregorys had a storied family history as musicians to the crown Prince's ancestors included the composer William Gregory d. 1663 violinist to Charles I; Henry Gregory member of the King's band to Charles II; and the 'singing man' John Gregory. Less can be ascertained about the lives of Margarey and Mary Gregory who inherited their book from their relative Prince. An interesting family copy which warrants further research. Printed on very good thick paper with handwritten notes of changes in the liturgy due to changes in the Royal family including the accession of Queen Victoria. A few marginal spots and apparent sooting to the extreme outer margins but otherwise bright and clean with the exception of the Communion which has a liquid stain apparently from communion wine. Endpapers with some marks in contemporary ink. Marbled endpapers. Bound in contemporary reverse calf with blindrolled borders. Front cover with large red morocco label with gilt rolled border and apparent dedication text "Mansfield Woodhouse. John Beardall and Thomas Huntingdon Churchwardens 1826." Spine with five raised bands. Spine leather split though binding still firmly holding with repair. Covers rubbed with losses at edges and corners. A very peculiar altar book which uses modern typeface but archaic lettering and spelling conventions resulting in some curious passages and with an interesting collection of notes on the evolution of the liturgy.</p> Printed at the Clarendon Press by J.
