A very handsome set in remarkably preserved and original binding some hinges expertly refurbished three covers detached clean internally but for the usual browning to some leaves due to paper stock used in the printing a large wide margined copy of this important work. FIRST COMPLETE AND BEST EDITION. John Rushworth born c. 1612 died May 12 1690 was the English historian whose Historical Collections of Private Passages of State 7 vol. 1659–1701; 8 vol. 1721 covering the period from 1618 to 1649 continues to be a valuable source of information on events leading up to and during the English Civil Wars.<br> Rushworth studied law and in 1638 was made solicitor to the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. He was enrolled at Lincoln’s Inn in 1640 and called to the bar in 1647. Rushworth was more interested in politics than in law and during the intermission of parliaments 1629–40 he attended and made shorthand notes of all important political and judicial proceedings heard before the Star Chamber the court of honour and the king and council. In 1640–42 he was assistant clerk to the House of Commons and after the outbreak of war he acted as a messenger between Parliament and its committees at Oxford and York. He himself published a number of the newssheets that preceded the establishment of regular newspapers—e.g. the daily London Post 1644–45; 1646–47 the Kingdomes Weekly Post 1643–1644—and also the parliamentary pamphlets opposed to the Royalist Mercurius Aulicus.<br> Following the execution of Charles I in 1649 Rushworth became personal secretary to Oliver Cromwell. He began drafting plans for the abolition of the monarchy and the House of Lords and the establishment of an English Republic under the leadership of Cromwell. As secretary 1645–50 to Sir Thomas Fairfax general of the New Model Army Rushworth had considerable importance and thereafter he was employed by the council of state and Parliament. When Cromwell became Lord Protector in 1653 Rushworth was promoted to Registrar of the Court of Admiralty. In 1657 he was elected Member of Parliament for Berwick in the Second Protectorate Parliament. As a member of the Cromwellian government he enjoyed the friendships of John Milton who served Cromwell as the official State Censor; John Owen; John Bunyan and many other well known people of that period. When Oliver Cromwell died on 3 September 1658 his son Richard Cromwell became Lord Protector.<br> At the Restoration Rushworth made peace with Charles II and although called to give information on the activities of the regicides was not himself implicated. In 1667 he became secretary to the lord keeper and later agent to the colony of Massachusetts. Despite his many emoluments and an inherited estate he fell into poverty and spent his last years in a lodging in the King’s Bench prison Southwark where he died.<br> Rushworth’s Historical Collections was compiled from his own notes and from printed material with the avowed intention of making it possible for a true history to be written of events that in pamphlets and news sheets dating from the period before the control of the press were liable to misrepresentation. It is most useful for its eyewitness accounts of the Earl of Strafford’s trial the Battle of Naseby and the parliamentary campaigns of 1644–45 and for its transmission of contemporary comment.<br> While Rushworth was remembered as a person his writings found favour in America where they served as a source of inspiration for Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson bought a copy of Rushworth's Historical Collections for use in his own library and he often quoted from them. Rushworth was a contemporary of John Lilburne whose writings had a profound impact on the history of the English Civil Wars of the 17th century. Although his senior he also shared much in common with Oliver Cromwell born 1599 because they were evangelical Christians who believed that the Church of England should undergo a total reformation contrary to the wishes of King Charles I. His views of Charles I as a king who had declared war on his own people were later echoed in words by Thomas Jefferson and others when writing about the reign of George III in the Declaration of Independence. 2 volumes in-8, plein veau marbré de l'époque, dos à 5 nerfs ornés de compartiments fleuronnés et cloisonnés, pièces de titre et de tomaison de maroquin bordeaux, filet d'encadrement à froid sur les plats, tranches rouges, (8), 192 p. et (3) f., 385, (1) p. Première édition française, sous pages de titre de remise en vente. Ornement aux titres. Bandeaux de De Sève, gravés sur cuivre par Fessard. Le premier ouvrage de Hutcheson dans lequel le père des Lumières écossaises, développe la théorie du "sens moral" dont la postérité fut considérable. La traduction serait due à l'encyclopédiste Marc-Antoine Eidous ou à Guillaume Laget. L'oeuvre de philosophie morale et esthétique d'Hutcheson, précurseur de l’utilitarisme, exerça une influence déterminante, notamment sur Hume, Thomas Reid, Kant ou Adam Smith dont il fut le professeur. Victor Cousin releva que la publication de cet ouvrage avait marqué "l’avènement de l’esthétique dans la philosophie européenne". "Généralement cité pour mémoire, Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746) mérite d'être lu dans le texte. La question de la nature et des rapports du Beau, du Bien, du Vrai et du Juste se pose à lui dans un contexte renouvelé (…). Identifier, au coeur de la vertu, la spécificité du sens et du sensible face aux calculs de la raison, telle est la tâche qu'il s'est assignée. Sa postérité, de Hume et Kant, qui lui doivent beaucoup, s'étend jusqu'à la philosophie analytique, qui voit en lui l'initiateur original de questions actuelles" (A.-D. Balmès, éditions Vrin). (Cf. Chuo, 127. Jessop, 144). Un unique exemplaire de ce tirage à la date de 1750 est recensé en France (CCFr): bibliothèque de l'Arsenal. Il est identique à celui de 1749, sauf les pages de titre et le dernier feuillet du T. II (p. 385-6) qui est cartonné. Quelques petites épidermures. Très bon exemplaire, frais, grand de marges.

Now held in an archival wallet. 24 pp. A scarce item Copac shows holdings only at BL Oxford & Cambridge. William Joseph Irons 1812-1883 was an Anglican priest and Theolgian. He was a strong defender of Church of England as the Established Church and argued against seceding from the church whether to Rome or to the more Protestant churches. He was the vicar of Brompton at the time of the publication of this work and the introduction is dated Brompton April 1843. He is names by Lawrence Crumb in "The Oxford Movement and its leaders a bibliography of Secondary and Lesser Primary Sources" as the probable author of this work. John Lee, unknown

James II of England a.k.a. James VII of Scotland while fleeing to France dropped the Great Seal of the Realm into the Thames. In Parliament the question was discussed whether he had forfeited the throne or had abdicated. The present volume offers detailed arguments for the both but ultimately the latter designation was agreed upon and in a full assembly of the Lords and Commons it was resolved in spite of James's protest "that King James II having endeavored to subvert the constitution of the kingdom by breaking the original contract between king and people and by the advice of Jesuits and other wicked persons having violated the fundamental laws and having withdrawn himself out of this kingdom has abdicated the government and that the throne is thereby vacant." Lettres de Monsieur l'abbé Le Blanc, Historiographe des bastimens du Roi. Nouvelle Edition de celles qui ont paru sous le titre de Lettres d'un François.
3 volumes in-12 (169 x 96 mm), plein veau marbré de l'époque, dos à nerfs ornés de compartiments fleuronnés et cloisonnés, pièces de titre et de tomaison de maroquin bordeaux et bronze, coupes filetées. Première édition sous ce titre des "Lettres d'un François sur les Anglois", donnée avec le consentement et sous la supervision de l'auteur et accompagnée d'une nouvelle préface. Adressées aux principales personnalités françaises du monde des lettres, des arts et des sciences (Buffon, Du Bos, Freret, Helvétius, Crébillon, Maupertuis, Duclos, le président Bouhier, Montesquieu, etc.), ces lettres "constituèrent la principale source sur l'Angleterre jusqu'à Montesquieu". L'abbé voyageur et philosophe rend compte de ses longs séjours en Angleterre et livre ses observations sur les moeurs, la religion, les sciences et les arts, l'industrie naissante, le commerce et la navigation, le gouvernement et "l'équilibre de pouvoirs", la justice, les modes, la gastronomie, la noblesse, l'architecture, le jardinage, la liberté de la presse et de l'édition, le théâtre, etc. Plusieurs concernent le statut des femmes. L'auteur traduisit lui-même son essai en anglais sous le titre de 'Letters on the English and French nations'. Né à Dijon, ecclésiastique, avocat au Parlement de Paris, homme des Lumières, Jean-Bernard Le Blanc (1707-1781) obtint la place d'historiographe des Bâtiments du Roi grâce à Madame de Pompadour. Il fut également l'un des premiers traducteurs de Hume en français. Selon Weller l'ouvrage aurait été imprimé à Paris. (Weller, II, 130). Quelques petits accrocs à la reliure. Très bon exemplaire, frais, bien relié à l'époque.

Ensemble des 4 dialogues reliés en un volume in-12, demi-chagrin à coins vert bronze, dos à nerfs plats surlignés de filets dorés, titre doré, daté en pied, tranches marbrées (rel. du XIXe). Edition originale des quatre "Dialogues de Pasquin & de Marforio", pamphlets dialogués, que Le Noble distribuait par intermittence et auxquels ses contemporains donnèrent le nom de "Pasquinades". "L'un des plus remarquables publicistes en France à la fin du XVIIe siècle". "Le 'Cibisme' (d'après le nom du cardinal Cibo) et le 'Songe de Pasquin' (…) se rapportent à la chute de Jacques II renversé par son gendre avec la complicité du pape, le 'Couronnement de Guillemot et de Guillemette' (Guillaume III et Marie d'York), le grand 'Sermon du docteur Burnet', prononcé pour cette circonstance, et le 'Festin de Guillemot' ont trait aux événements d'Angleterre" ('Sources de l'Histoire de France', n°1956). Les pièces sont reliées dans le désordre. Mors frottés. Bon exemplaire.
