More hand written notes from the same period written on the front paste down about the book and library. Leather binding patched on the spine joints and covers. First 4 leaves edge torn taped in the gutters and stained this volume suffered water damage. Purplish stains in the text gradually disappearing by page 300. No mold found inside. Browning to the gutters. Several page tears at bottom and top in the gutters. Remains of the half title page pasted down onto a sheet of white paper and bound in before the title page. Sir Jonathan Trelawny Bishop of Bristol William Lloyd Bishop of St. Asaph William Sancroft Bishop of Canterbury was three of the Bishops on trial for seditious libel under King James II. From wikipedia: <br /> <br /> Sir Jonathan Trelawny 3rd Baronet 24 March 1650 – 19 July 1721 was a British Bishop of Bristol Bishop of Exeter and Bishop of Winchester. Trelawny is best known for his role in the events leading up to the Glorious Revolution which are sometimes believed to be referenced in the Cornish anthem The Song of the Western Men. He was born at Trelawne in the parish of Pelynt Cornwall the eldest surviving son of Sir Jonathan Trelawny 2nd Baronet. He was educated at Westminster School and then went to Christ Church Oxford at the start of the Michaelmas term of 1668 where he distinguished himself as a scholar.<br /> A staunch royalist he was ordained in 1673 and became a beneficed clergyman. He was appointed rector of South Hill on 4 October and of St. Ives on 12 December 1677 becoming Bishop of Bristol in 1685. He was one of the Seven Bishops tried for seditious libel under James II. Trelawny and the other bishops petitioned against James II's Declaration of Indulgence in 1687 and 1688 granting religious tolerance to Catholics and as a result he was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London on charges of seditious libel. The bishops said that whilst they were loyal to King James II their consciences would not agree to allowing freedom of worship to Catholics even if it were to be within the privacy of their own homes as the Declaration proposed; thus they could not sign. Trelawny was held for three weeks before trial then tried and acquitted; this led to great celebrations with bells being rung in his home parish of Pelynt.1<br /> <br /> William Lloyd was born at Tilehurst in Berkshire in 1627 the son of Richard Lloyd then vicar1 who was the son of David Lloyd of Henblas Anglesey. By the age of eleven he had understanding in Greek and Latin and somewhat of Hebrew before attending Oriel and Jesus Colleges Oxford later becoming a Fellow of Jesus College.2 He graduated M.A. in 1646. In 1663 he was prebendary of Ripon in 1667 prebendary of Salisbury in 1668 archdeacon of Merioneth in 1672 dean of Bangor and prebendary of St Paul's London in 1680 bishop of St Asaph in 1689 lord-almoner in 1692 bishop of Lichfield and Coventry and in 1699 bishop of Worcester.3 As Bishop of Lichfield he rebuilt the diocesan residence at Eccleshall Castle which had been destroyed in the Civil War.4<br /> Lloyd was an indefatigable opponent of the Roman Catholic tendencies of James II of England and was one of the seven bishops who for refusing to have the Declaration of Indulgence read in his diocese was charged with publishing a seditious libel against the king.3 However he was acquitted in 1688 which was one of the events that lead to the fall of James II.citation needed<br /> He engaged Gilbert Burnet to write The History of the Reformation of the Church of England and provided him with much material. He was a good scholar and a keen student of biblical apocalyptic literature and himself "prophesied" to Anne Queen of Great Britain Robert Harley 1st Earl of Oxford and Mortimer William Whiston and John Evelyn the diarist. Lloyd was a staunch supporter of the Glorious Revolution.3<br /> He lived to the age of ninety-one and died at Hartlebury Castle on 30 August 1717. He was buried in the church of Fladbury near Evesham in Worcestershire of which his son was rector and where a monument is erected to his memory with a long inscription.5<br /> <br /> William Sancroft 30 January 1617 – 24 November 1693 was the 79th Archbishop of Canterbury2 and was one of the Seven Bishops imprisoned in 1688 for seditious libel against King James II over his opposition to the king's Declaration of Indulgence. Deprived of his office in 1690 for refusing to swear allegiance to William and Mary he later enabled and supported the consecration of new nonjuring bishops leading to the nonjuring schism. Very handsomely illustrated with two elaborately engraved title-pages and ninety additional full-page engravings. Quarto handsomely bound in period full dark-green grained morocco the spines with raised bands separating the compartments which are elaborately decorated in gilt in elaborate multi-tooled designs two compartments lettered in gilt the covers with gine gilt rolled borders surrounded by triple gilt filleted rules gilt rolled turnovers rose endleaves all edges gilt. cxxvii 92; 93-209 ci 12 Index and Colophon pp. A fine set very pleasingly preserved the bindings strong and handsome the text and illustrations crisp clean and unpressed some very occasional spotting to some fore-edges but an unusually nice set of the first edition. FIRST EDITION. 'The work of the poet and novelist Sir Walter Scott 1771–1832 frequently reflected his interest in Scottish history and he is regarded as having written some of the most influential historical fiction of the nineteenth century. His literary works include the poem The Lady of the Lake and the novels Waverley and Ivanhoe. Originally published in these two volumes in 1814–17 is a work of non-fiction that illuminates Border history as revealed through architecture and artefacts. Scott was not the sole author but his substantial introduction sets the historical scene for the entries on various castles churches and other historic structures on both sides of the border. Illustrative extracts of his poetry are also included along with many detailed engravings of the evocative scenes and buildings described.' Cambridge University<br> The Border Antiquities of England and Scotland was initially published in 1814 co-authored by John Greig and William Mudford with contributions from Sir Walter Scott notably in the substantial introductory essay. The book is a survey of “specimens of architecture and sculpture and other vestiges of former ages†from the border regions of Scotland and England with historical descriptions accompanied by Greig’s engravings. The illustrations prioritise the empirical details of the architecture monuments and objects discussed in the text but at the same time in a typically nineteenth-century fashion they contextualise the historical monuments within romanticised landscapes.<br> Capturing the historic buildings and sculptures in as much detail as possible the images present complex three-dimensional structures in all of their depth and detail using only lines and hatching on a two-dimensional frame. Paying minute attention to the damage on the structures the weathering and the differing textures of building materials these engravings are executed with scientific precision but without the flatness and sterility of a diagram.<br> Not only do the engravings present clean and clear renderings of the structures described in the text they also incorporate elements of the same romanticism that infuses Scott’s literature. Almost every one of Greig’s illustrations incorporates staffage which gives a sense of scale and depth whilst also an adding allegorical side notes to each illustration. The figures serve a dual purpose technical and aesthetic directing the viewer’s eye to significant points in the image while also creating a romantic context for the scene. A natural abundance is emphasised in each engraving with lush trees and shrubbery framing the historical monuments within a romantic landscape while also acting as a device to create atmospheric recession. Greig even includes incidental details like birds over water and interactions between figures which also help to create the sense that the scene captures a specific place and time. In contextualising the scenes for the viewer these stylistic elements aid in the struggle towards achieving the illusion of three-dimensional space on the two-dimensional surface. The Scotland team was made up entirely of players from Queen's Park the most successful Scottish club of the period. The game ended a 0-0 draw watched by a crowd of 4000 who had paid a shilling each for admission." London: Illustrated London News 1871. Very good condition. Double page image from the Illustrated London News of the friendly association football match now called soccer between England & Scotland at The Oval London on 17 November 1871 which England won. <br /> <br /> The first official match was held on 30 November 1872 on Scotland's national saint's day St. Andrew's Day and it took place at Hamilton Crescent in Partick home of the West of Scotland Cricket Club. The Scotland team was made up entirely of players from Queen's Park the most successful Scottish club of the period. Relation d'un voyage en Angleterre, où sont touchées plusieurs choses, qui regardent l'estat des Sciences et de la Religion, et autres matières curieuses.
Cologne, Pierre Michel ( A la sphère), 1666; in-12, vélin de l'époque. 6 ff., 192 pp., 1 planche dépliante. Edition faite à Amsterdam, rattachée parfois aux presses elzéviriennes. (Brunet V, 455). Elle porte une sphère d'A. Wolfgang utilisée semble t-il, dans l'officine de Warnaer (Rahir 2288 - Willems 1760).L'auteur anonyme de cette intéressante relation est le libertin érudit Samuel Sorbière, le neveu de Samuel Petit, né près d'Uzès en 1615. Il fut le traducteur de Th. More et de Hobbes. Né protestant, il rejoignit les papistes et se convertit en 1653. Guy Patin prétendit que ce « retournement de jaquette » n'avait rien de métaphysique. L'intérêt et la politique seuls ont opéré cette conversion. Cette intéressante relation du séjour de l'auteur en Angleterre lui permet de rendre hommage à Monconys et surtout à Hobbes dont il avait traduit le De Cive. Le livre offensa la Cour de Danemark égratignée dans plusieurs passages. Une lettre de cachet exila Sorbière pendant quelques temps à Nantes. Haag IX, 289.Au sujet de l'auteur et de ce livre Cf. Pages 29 30 and the rear wrap have a small chip upper edge resulting in loss of a couple of letters. <br /> <br /> This pamphlet was published shortly before "The War of Jenkins Ear" with Spain. Contents cover trade issues in the new American colonies; sale of "Negroes"; Native Americans; European countries etc. <br /> <br /> Sabin 64143. From wikipedia:<br /> <br /> The War of Jenkins' Eara was fought by Great Britain and Spain between 1739 and 1748. The majority of the fighting took place in New Granada and the Caribbean Sea with major operations largely ended by 1742. It is considered a related conflict of the 1740 to 1748 War of the Austrian Succession. The name derives from Robert Jenkins a British sea captain whose earb was allegedly severed in April 1731 by Spanish coast guards searching his ship for contraband. In 1738 opposition politicians in the British Parliament used the incident to incite support for a war against Spain.2<br /> <br /> The most significant operation of the war was a failed British attack on Cartagena in 1741 which resulted in heavy casualties and was not repeated.3 Apart from minor actions in Spanish Florida Georgia and Havana after 1742 Britain and Spain focused their efforts on the War of the Austrian Succession in Europe. 8 (sur 9) volumes in-12, plein veau blond marbré et glacé de l'époque, dos à nerfs ornés de compartiments fleuronnés et cloisonnés, filets d'encadrement à froid sur les plats, filets dorés sur les coupes, tranches rouges. Richard Steele, éditeur original du "Spectateur" fut principalement aidé par Addison, Hughes, Budgel, Eusden, Pope, Pearce, Byron, Grove et Tickell. Si le traducteur des premiers volumes n'est pas connu, la "France littéraire" attribue à l'encyclopédiste Elie de Joncourt la traduction des deux derniers. (Barbier, IV, 560). Le neuvième volume est un volume de "supplément". Le volume 7 manque. Défaut à un coin du tome VI. Ex-libris gravé de l'époque, surmonté d'une couronne de marquis, non identifié. Bel exemplaire bien relié à l'époque.
