Thomson, James; Stockdale, Percival.
THE SEASONS, BY JAMES THOMSON; With his Life, an Index, and Glossary. A Dedication to the Earl of Buchan, and Notes to the Seasons, by Percival Stockdale.
pp. xxiv, 221, (19) [Notes to the Seasons of Thomson], 223-227 [Index and Glossary] + Engraved Portrait Frontis + Engraved Title Page. Apparently lacks the printed title. Each poem has an engraved headpiece and tailpiece. Four full page engravings. One engraving of a nude has a childish outlining. Foxed. Booklabel of James W. Paul, Jr. on front paste down. Early inked manuscript ownership of Thos. Rodman on fly leaf. Includes an interesting Subscribers List. 245mm. Original full worn leather binding. Front board detached. Spine very worn with loss. The center of each board is sprinkle decorated in such a way as to show a memorial urn. Binding is worn but quite unusual. James W. Paul Jr. was a wealthy bankermarried to socialite Fanny Drexel (1855-1892). Their estate (Woodcrest) had a Horace Trumbauer designed 51-room, half-timbered mansion for banker. It took just two years to build, but the mix of medieval and Georgian styles was intended to make it look like it had evolved over generations. It is now on the grounds of Cabrini College.
