A demure little 24mo size book just over 5" tall; full dark brown morocco boards ornate lacquered brass trim at board edges see scans gilt spine imprinting original owner's name in gilt on front cover scan All Edges Gilt dark brown endpapers hinge-bead-clasp closure with the clasp itself removed by the original owner as was commonly the case because of its interference unpaginated but at least six hundred pages. A quite-handsome Very Good or better; small-scale peripheral scuffing a crack at the front hinge which is nonetheless still quite stoutly integral modest toning to the pages inside and really not much else to point to; clasp as noted was removed by the original owner one Emilie A. A New Version of the Psalms of David. Birmingham: printed by John Baskerville 1762 52 leaves; together in contemporary full green goat fancy gilt borders on covers with floral devices in the corners enclosing a central gilt lozenge gilt-decorated spine in 6 compartments unlettered a.e.g.; the binding is darkened and slightly worn and 2 old bookseller descriptions are tipped in at the front; all else quite good and sound. An old note in pencil on the verso of the front free endpaper proclaims this to be an "Irish binding." "Baskerville printed three octavo editions of The Book of Common Prayer. The first which appeared in 1760 was set in long lines of Great Primer. There were two impressions one with and the other without a border round each page . cancelled title pages were substituted later in 1760 and in 1761. The second edition appeared later in 1760 . and two impressions were printed with and without borders. It was first published at 7s. 6d but in 1761 the price was raised to 8s.6d. The Royal Prayers are found in the second state only as cancels. The third and final edition was published in 1762 set in long lines of Great Primer without borders" Gaskell.
