Disbound pamphlet bound into recent period-style three-quarter calf over paper-covered boards calf title panel to center of front board. Moderate toning to text light foxing and tiny inkspots to a few leaves "2" in early hand to head of front endleaf. A nice copy in a handsome binding. $300. An important document in the history of the English Reformation this was the first collection of ecclesiastical law compiled by the Church of England that was not derived from Roman Catholic sources. It was originally enacted in 1571 and amended in 1603 and 1640. This latter issue contains the notorious Article VI "Impugners of the Rites and Ceremonies Established in the Church Censured" which incensed the Puritans. Early Brighton Binding. The new week's preparation for a worthy receiving of the Lord's Supper as recommended and appointed by the Church of England; consisting of meditations and prayers
London: Printed by assignment from the executors of E. Wicksteed for W. Bent 1785. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo pp. 6 ix 1 156; the first leaf consisting of an approbation on the recto and an engraved frontispiece on the verso; contemporary and probably original black goatskin with decorative gilt border and similar border outlining central panels on the covers smooth gilt spine with winged cherub heads a.e.g. green ribbon page maker; minor refurbishment at head and tail of spine. ¶ An attractive English binding possibly made in Brighton on account of the early provenance of two women owners see below. This edition is not listed ESTC or OCLC and is distinguished by the engraved frontispiece on the verso the printed appeal by W. Bent dated 1785 warning the public of "surreptitious" counterfeit editions of the present work. Indeed two similar but not identical editions are listed by ESTC; these are recorded in just one or two libraries each. Both editions are reproduced in "Eighteenth Century Collections Online" and ours represents an entirely different setting of type. THE BINDING: The most extraordinary tools on the present binding are surely the "bat-wing" cherubs that adorn the entire length of the spine quite distinctive and yet apparently remain unrecorded. It is very possible that the workshop was provincial perhaps Brighton which accounts for a paltry amount of literature published on the subject. PROVENANCE: Early inscriptions of two women collectors appear on the verso of the first flyleaf: "Sarah Lumsdale 9 Bloomsbury Place Brighton" NB: this house still exists -- "Mary Cobb April 11 1800." The use of the singular for the sacraments is an error see Griffiths. Both the British Library and the Huntington have copies with this variation. Special full black straight grained morocco both boards centrally inlaid red green and gilt insignia with the name Thos. Harrison above insignia and dated 1823 below boards trimmed in a decorative gilt roll binding by Thomas Harrison with 1825 on front cover with red insignia. These family Bibles also could contain as in this case the Book of Common Prayer and the "old" version metrical psalter with the expectation that they would serve the master of the house in leading family worship.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: "William Tillsons Bible" in manuscript above manuscript family records on the recto of the first blank; other family notes are recorded on its back and on the verso of the front free endpaper. Someone has taken the trouble to paste a large slip of paper onto the recto of the front free endpaper over a large ownership note that may read "Thomas Tilison His Bible Septr 4th 1784. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Prayer Book: Griffiths Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer 1786/2; ESTC N66721. Psalter: not in ESTC. Bible: not in Darlow & Moule or ESTC; Herbert 1286. Contemporary calf covers panelled in blind with remnants of clasps. Front joint open with cords strongly holding; covers abraded with incisions and leather loss to edges; spine leather dry and cracking; front fly-leaf and next blank detached. Prayer Book only lacking title-page and two preliminary leaves; another early leaf detached with a closed tear across no loss of text. Bible: Foxing and brown spotting with a few closed tears and occasional chipping in the margins the last resulting in loss of words from a few shouldernotes. Cambridge: James Field 1664. 12mo. 1 f 171 1 blank pp. lacks blank leaf k6.<br>Â Â Â Â The mid-17th century was a low point in the history of English typography but in this pair of Anglican religious texts James Field printer to the University of Cambridge produced => a very good example of the printer's art of Greek printing especially in the use of a small point size. The guiding force behind their production was James Duport 160679 dean of Peterborough and master of Magdelene College Cambridge a noted scholar of Latin and Greek and supporter of the university press. The preface to the Book of Common Prayer is signed with his initials and it is established that he was the editor of the Psalms; the texts were almost certainly issued together but are also at times found individually in contemporary binding.<br>Â Â Â Â Field's minute typography here is dense and presented chiefly in double-column format in both works; and instead of woodcut head- or tailpieces and xylographic initials he deploys printer's ornaments to enliven the text at the top of some sections and occasionally elsewhere. => The layout is overall lovely and thoughtful and the printing is extremely clear and precise.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Contemporary morocco with covers framed in a single blind fillet; spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and gilt-stamped compartment decorations. Marbled endpapers all edges gilt. => All pages ruled in red in the best style of the era.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Isaac Watts 16741748 the godfather of English hymnody is also fondly remembered for his Psalms of David: Imitated in the Language of the New Testament a work that was reprinted over a thousand times. His ownership signature is on the blank leaf opposite the BCP title-page here. Later the volume was owned by Charles Mayo 17671858 a scholar of Old English who dated his ownership as "St. John's College Oxford 1787." Most recently in the library of American collector of Greek printing Albert A. This impression printed in the same year as the first edition features decorative page borders; its title-page matches the description of Gaskell's Group 2 with the third line printed in roman and the price listed as "Seven Shillings and Six Pence unbound." The final text leaf is Ll2; there are interpolated signatures rz between Q and R.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Contemporary red morocco framed and panelled in gilt rolls with gilt-stamped corner fleurons board edges and turn-ins with gilt roll; later rebacked with red morocco spine beautifully stamped in foliate and geometric designs originally gilt but now virtually entirely black/blind. The book of common prayer: King James anno 1604 commonly called the Hampton Court Book.

Folio 35.1 cm 13.8". 260 pp. <br><br>Pickering's beautiful type facsimile of Robert Barker's 1604 edition a.k.a. the Hampton Court Book here in a Rivière binding. Charles Whittingham printed the work on handmade paper in black-letter type for Pickering who inspired by the printing of Aldus Manutius published in 1844 a series of six such facsimiles of important editions of the Book of Common Prayer each of which was => illustrated with wood-engraved initials and ornaments done by Mary Byfield and limited to => only 350 copies printed on paper with another two on vellum. The original title-pages were reproduced for each in => red and black and in the case of the present example the almanac pages likewise printed in red and black. Each book in this homage to important editions of the BCP was => an outstanding example of the Victorian-era Gothic design movement and Kelly notes that these volumes are "considered to be among the finest work of Whittingham."<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Signed 19th-century dark brown morocco framed and panelled in single gilt and double blind fillets with gilt-tooled corner fleurons surrounding a central arabesque medallion; spine with raised bands gilt-stamped fleur-de-lis decorations in compartments and gilt-stamped publication information. All edges gilt. Front lower turn-in stamped by Rivière.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Front free endpaper with small stamp of Basil M. Pickering who took over the business after his father's death; later in the library of American collector Albert A. Tes kaines diathekes apanta. 12mo. 2 419 1 pp.<br>Â Â Â Â First edition of this Greek translation of the Book of Common Prayer. The preface is signed "I.D." i.e. James Duport a popular professor of Greek at the University of Cambridge who had the year before printed a translation of the Psalter which appears here with the BCP as issued under a separate title-page and Ordinal along with the Greek New Testament and Apocrypha the title-page of the New Testament being an insert and the Apocrypha having separate pagination. This is only the second translation of the BCP into Greek following the first by Elias Petley in 1638. There were apparently two settings of this edition produced by printer John Field in the same year under the same title and imprint with priority not established; the present example has line six of the main title-page all in capital letters and the "Alma mater Cantabrigia" device following the last page of the Psalter but while the sun is on the left and the cup on the right of the Psalter title-page device they are reversed on the New Testament title-page apparently indicating that the New Testament is from a variant post-dating the BCP and Psalter.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Contemporary mottled calf Cambridge-style covers framed in double gilt fillets and panelled in triple gilt fillets with gilt-tooled corner fleurons; spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and gilt-ruled compartments.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Front free endpaper with early inscription in red pencil: "Gibson's / Queens / Oxon. / 1787." Corners and spine worn head and toe of spine chipped front pastedown loose but present; later bookplate on pastedown signature on free endsheet: "Rich. Rycroft" possibly Sir Richard Rycroft 1st Baronet 1736-1786. Contemporary inscription on first titlepage some tanning and occasional light smudging but a good copy. An uncommon printing of the revised text of the Delaune's translation of the English Liturgy first published in 1616 and John Durel's translation of the 39 Articles. Durel 1625-1683 an Anglican clergyman and apologist enjoyed a distinguished career and royal favor securing a printing monopoly on this French prayer book and eventually becoming a royal chaplain in 1662. The translation into French verse is that undertaken by Clement Marot and Theodore de Beze early in the previous century.
