Archival memories: Marcell Restle's research in Anatolia and beyond.
New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). In English. 192 p., ills. Archival memories: Marcell Restle's research in Anatolia and beyond. Authors: Su Sultan Akülker, Klaus Belke, Birgitt Borkopp-Restle, Friedrich Hild, Cedric Huss, Johannes Koder, Caroline Mang, Philipp Pichler, Nina Rannharter, Marcell Restle, Lioba Theis, B. Tolga Uyar, Peter Waldhausl... Marcell Restle was born in 1932 in a small town named Bad Waldsee in southern Germany and studied art history, Byzantine studies, and the history of Christianity at the universities of Tu?bingen and Munich. The classes Restle took from German and Turkish professors at Istanbul University, where he studied for a year, opened up new horizons for him. The studies he made of Islamic, Seljuk, and, especially, Ottoman art and architecture, as well as of Byzantine art; the classes he taught at the universities of Vienna and Munich on these topics; and the countless study trips he made around the Eastern Mediterranean, including to Istanbul and Anatolia, made him an expert in the field of architecture, especially in the systematic documentation of buildings. "Archival Memories" on the one hand informs viewers about how a researcher organized his working day, how he systematically allotted his time, and what methods he used in the pre-digital age. On the other hand, it aims to present from retrospective perspectives the states of numerous cultural assets, most of which remain today only as memories within urban structures.

Cultural encounters in Anatolia in the Medieval period: The Italians in Anatolia in 12th - 15th centuries. Symposium Proceedings.= Orta Çag'da Anadolu'da kültürel karsilasmalar: 12-15. yüzyillarda Anadolu'da Italyanlar. Sempozyum bildirileri. Starting from Spring 2014, VEKAM organizes an international symposium once a year on Cultural Encounters in Anatolia in the Medieval Period. After the Georgian Empire and the Ilkhanids this year's theme is on "Italians in Anatolia during 12th and 15th Centuries" (Istanbul excluded). The symposium held on May 13th, 2016 at the premises of VEKAM in Ankara/ Turkey. "The Mongol victory over the Seljuks in 1243, the Mongol sack of Baghdad in 1258, which led to the commercial rise of Tabriz, and the rapprochement between Cilician Armenia and the Mongols resulted in a shift of the trade route across Anatolia. Ayas in Cilician Armenia replaced Antalya as its Mediterranean outlet. Mongol rule also furthered trade between Tabriz and the Black Sea port of Trebizond. It is along these itineraries that Italian merchants travelled to and from Mongol territories, as illustrated by the journeys of the father and uncle of Marco Polo and of Marco himself in the second half of the 13th Century. At Ayas on the shore of Cilicia Venice received trading privileges in 1261, well after Genoa's first treaty with the Armenian kingdom (1201). The Venetian element in Ayas' foreign merchant community grew with the general increase in the intensity of trade and with the inception of the state galley run or incanto. But international trading activity at Ayas, and the use of the tracks to Sivas, seems to have been cut short by the Mamluks' acquisition of the port in 1337...".

The lure of the East: British orientalist painting.= Dogu'nun cazibesi: Britanya oryantalist resmi. [Exhibition catalogue].
New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 360 p., color ills. The lure of the East: British orientalist painting.= Dogu'nun cazibesi: Britanya oryantalist resmi. [Exhibition catalogue]. This exhibition focused on the paintings made by British artists of the 'Orient', primarily during the nineteenth century. In this context the term 'Orient', to Western Europeans, meant those parts of the eastern Mediterranean world which could be accessed relatively easily such as Egypt, Palestine and Turkey, particularly after the development of steamboat and rail travel in the 1830s. In these places, predominantly Muslim and at least nominally under the control of the Ottoman Empire, British artists, such as David Roberts, David Wilkie, William Holman Hunt, John Frederick Lewis and Frederic Leighton, sought to develop imagery which captured what they believed to be characteristic of the people, cities and landscapes of the region. In the 1970s the Palestinian-American academic Edward Said published his treatise on Orientalism, initiating a global debate over Western representations of the Middle East. For many, such representations now appeared to be a sequence of fictions, serving the West's desire for superiority and control over the East. The argument for and against Said's Orientalism has continued for thirty years. Its resonance for an exhibition such as this one, however, is as strong as ever given that, by the 1920s (the end of the period covered by this exhibition), Britain was in direct control of much of the newly abolished Ottoman Empire, including Egypt, Palestine and Iraq. As Said argued, these images cannot be viewed in isolation from their wider political and cultural context. Keeping the debates around Orientalism in mind, "The Lure of the East" focuses on the range of pictorial options open to British artists, within five major themes: portraits, genre, religious and domestic subjects and landscape. British painters came to the Middle East from a culture steeped in technical and compositional artistic traditions. Such traditions were not easily unlearned, despite the apparent difference of the people and places the artists encountered on their travels. Given this, British Orientalist painters found many challenges in attempting to represent the Middle East, but they also found inspiration and, more importantly, the freedom to rework, reinvent and even discard those conventions that defined picture-making in Britain.

Cultural encounters in Anatolia in the Medieval period: The Ilkhanids in Anatolia Sypmposium Preceedings.
New English Paperback. 4to. (27 x 20 cm). Edition in English. 135, [1] p., color ills. Cultural encounters in Anatolia in the Medieval period: The Ilkhanids in Anatolia Sypmposium Preceedings. Starting from Spring 2014, VEKAM has been organizing yearly international symposiums to introduce various cultures that lived in Anatolia and support research in these fields of study. The symposium proceeding volume titled Cultural Encounters in Anatolia in the Medieval Period : Ilkhanids in Anatolia which was held on may 21st-22nd May, 2015 at the premises of VEKAM in Ankara/ Turkey focuses on the fields such as; history, literature, mysticism, art, urban history and architecture during the Ilkhanid Period. In this respect we believe that the Ilkhanids in Anatolia symposium proceedings will fill an important gap and lead up new researches in this field. From Wiki: "The Anti-Jacobin Review and Magazine, or, Monthly Political and Literary Censor (1798 to 1821), a conservative British political periodical, was founded by John Gifford [pseud. of John Richards Green] (17581818) after the demise of William Gifford's The Anti-Jacobin, or, Weekly Examiner (1797-1798). Gifford and Andrew Bisset were the chief writers, and the political philosopher James Mill wrote reviews. Described as "often scurrilous" and "ultra-Tory," [1] the journal contained essays, reviews, and satirical engravings, notably by James Gillray. It grew out of the political ferment of the period and was a vocal element of the British Anti-Jacobin backlash against the ideals of the French Revolution." Hardbound.
