Nombre de ces représentations sont totalement inconnues et sont d'une vivacité saisissante. Les réactions changeantes sont décrites dans les œuvres des principaux artistes, des livres enluminés de Blake aux gravures satiriques de Gillray, en passant par les médaillons de Wedgwood et les œuvres de cire sanglantes de Madame Tussaud.
