First printing octavo size 370 pp. Jack John Griffith London 1876-1916 remains a highly beloved author and his stories are still widely read today; beginning his career as a newspaper reporter he gained fame with the publication of "The Call of the Wild" in July of 1903 and would eventually write over twenty novels and numerous short stories before dying tragically young from complications arising from previous illnesses including scurvy. <br /> <br /> This work written by London's second wife Charmian recounts their time in Hawaii between 1907 and his death; before he died he helped her edit the text. Copies with the imprint of the Patten Company Honolulu are extremely scarce in the marketplace; as of this writing we see only one other copy online. <br /> <br /> ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full steel-blue ribbed cloth over boards gilt lettering and small horizontal vignette of a beachfront at the bottom of the front board spine with gilt lettering and another small gilt vignette half-title page with Macmillan device on the verso frontis photograph of "Jack London at Waikiki 1915" title page with Patten Company Honolulu imprint copyright date of 1917 with "Published December 1917" stated printed at the Norwood Press Massachusetts three-page Foreword by Charmian London dated September 1 1917 sixteen plates bound in throughout one a coloured map of Hawaii the rest being reproductions of black-and-white photographs most of the plates containing several images; octavo size 8" by 5 1/2" pagination: i-viii ix-xvi 2 1-345 346 blank 347-352 publisher's ads. <br /> <br /> ___CONDITION: A solid very good copy the boards clean the gilt on the front board bright and unrubbed the top corners straight and unrubbed the bottom corners gently bumped and with a modicum of rubbing a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean although with a fair amount of foxing throughout collated complete with all plates present and entirely free of prior owner markings; the head and tail of the spine lightly bumped we had a professional name available upon request touch up the front board and upper portion of the spine to mitigate some silverfishing and there is evidence of removal of a leaf between the frontispiece and the title page which is a mystery as the book collates complete. <br /> <br /> ___POSTAGE: International customers please note the following: i additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs please inquire for details; and ii any taxes duty or tariffs charged by your country will of necessity be your responsibility. <br /> <br /> ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Inscribed by the author on a tipped in leaf preceding the half-title page: "Dearest Edith / to you as your own self and as Claire's sister I need not say that this was the most wonderful thing that ever happened to the right man and woman! / Lovingly Charmian;" datemarked The Valley of the Moon 1919. Inside front cover has mounted envelope containing a lengthy TLS ca. 350 words from Charmian London to Edith B. Williams dated 1918; Williams's bookplate inside front cover; publisher's prospectus for the 1921 revised edition of Our Hawaii laid in. Octavo 23cm; entirely rebound in plain green institutional buckram titled in gilt on the spine; 345pp; illus. Very Good with some mild external rubbing light foxing throughout heavier to title page. The mounted envelope remains but the letter has been removed and placed in a clear mylar sleeve for preservation. <br /> <br /> Edith "Kulamanu" Williams 1889-1972 born in Canada was a long-time resident of Honolulu where she ran a dance studio from the mid-1930s well into her later years; the Londons appear to have become acquainted with Edith and her sister Claire on their second Pacific cruise in 1915. The sisters are mentioned fleetingly in the book's text on pp. 277 and 339. In her long and personal letter to Edith included here Charmian writes about the success of Our Hawaii then just published: "My new book seems to be going well. They tell me Hawaii's second order for it was for 500 copies. That looks good. If Hawaii likes it with all its faults I am well repaid for all the heart's blood I put into it.Shall send you a copy soon. You'd have had it sooner except that Macmillans sic couldn't let me have the copies. Sold out also difficulty about the labor and getting more copies bound." <br /> <br /> Given this last statement it's conceivable though unprovable that the current copy in its homely buckram binding was one either provided to Ms. London by Macmillan in the absence of available trade copies or bound at either her or Ms. Williams' request from publisher's sheets. But in the absence of corroborating evidence to that effect we offer it as an interesting if unlovely association copy of Ms. London's most popular book a narrative of Pacific travels with her husband the novelist Jack London. A small octavo of 8 3/4 by 5 1/4 inches with minor rubbing to the cloth at the head and heel of the spine and to the tips of the boards and with a prior owner's name date city and state on the front paste down. Laid-in at the front of the book is a one page letter signed and written by Charmian London saying "No Matter how I revise or change this book still does it remain a love story - of a great man a lovely country & it's sic loving people." Dated June 1 1922 "Glen Ellen California" 427 pages of text and illustrated with a frontispiece from a photograph and nine plates one of which is a color map of the Hawaiian Islands and the rest from photographs. First Edition.</p><p><em>Our Hawaii i</em>s a captivating travel memoir and historical narrative written by Charmian Kittredge London the wife of the famous American author Jack London. Originally published in 1917 the book chronicles the couple's extensive travels deep admiration and experiences throughout the Hawaiian Islands during their visits in 1907 and 1915–1916. Charmian initially kept detailed daily diaries during a two-year South Seas voyage on their sailboat the <em>Snark</em>. While Jack published his perspective in <em>The Cruise of the Snark</em> Charmian carved out her Hawaiian journal entries to form this standalone book.</p><p>This copy is inscribed by Charmian London on the front free endpaper; "Dear Jessie: - Here's the yarn at last: and I know you'll read it for the love story it is. Lovingly Charmain Gen Ellen May 31 1918." This copy is from the library of Becky London and is signed by her on the half title page.</p><p><strong>Condition: </strong>Inscribed by the author on the front endpaper.
