New York NY: Grosset & Dunlap. Very Good. 1912. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; First Edition with points noted in Sisson pages 33-34. The book is in Very Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some bumping rubbing and light edge wear. There is a very slight slant to the spine of the book. There are several small spots of wear / light color loss to the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright and there are eight full page color plates by Charles Livingston Bull included. The front inner hinge has a three inch crack. "Before Adam is a novel by Jack London serialized in 1906 and 1907 in Everybody's Magazine. It is the story of a man who dreams he lives the life of an early hominid. The story offers an early view of human evolution. The majority of the story is told through the eyes of the man's hominid alter ego one of the Cave People. In addition to the Cave People there are the more advanced Fire People and the more animal-like Tree People. Other characters include the hominid's father a love interest and Red-Eye a fierce "atavism" that perpetually terrorizes the Cave People. A sabre-cat also plays a role in the story. LONDON, Jack
Before Adam

SIGNED First edition of Jack London's Before Adam 1907. lengthily inscribed by London in the year of publication in the publisher's ORIGINAL DUST JACKET the only copy of this London best seller in jacket we've seen! Color illustration on frontispiece illustrations in text by Charles Livingston Bull. Publisher's original light-brown buckram with wraparound footprints illustration and tan topstain. Tan dust jacket printed in red. Chipping to top edge of jacket especially to spine with loss of text browning to endpapers. Before Adam tells its story in the words of a narrator who proclaims himself a "freak of heredity" with direct biological access through his nightmares to the memories of a prehistoric ancestor "Big Tooth." The narrator has assembled these memories into a chronological account of Big Tooth's life which occurred at a stage of prehistory in which humans existed simultaneously at three evolutionary levels. Before Adam has much in common with Stanley Waterloo's The Story of Ab published in 1897. Waterloo eventually accused London of plagiarism though the latter denied the charges and insisted he was merely inspired by it. Before Adam employs a common currency with The Story of Ab of course in its elements of primeval hordes brutes subhumans striving to enter the human state atavisms shamanistic racial memories and so on but the most probable direct source for London's characters is Darwin's notion of the Primal Horde in which a powerful male terrorizes the younger males of the group in order to monopolize the females. Remarkably Before Adam both foreshadows Freud's depiction of the origins of civilization in Totem and Taboo 1913 and obliges Darwin's The Descent of Man 1871. A Very Good copy signed inscribed and dated by London in Oakland CA. in its original dust jacket preserved in a custom clamshell box. Book #Bv1407. $8800. New York: Published for the Review of Reviews Company by the Macmillan Company 1913. Reprint. Near Fine. Authorized Edition fourth printing. Presentation copy signed by Jack London on the front free endpaper and inscribed to his physician Dr. A.R. Goodman the latter's bookplate to front pastedown: "Dear Doctor Goodman: - You are billed to pull our latch string share our blankets & straddle our horses here in the Valley of the Moon ---- don't forget that is a date. July 10 1914."

xii 242 pp. Bound in publisher's bead-grain blue cloth stamped in blind and lettered in gilt top edge gilt. Near Fine with light rubbing to extremities; hinges just starting. Cloth and gilt bright.

A crisp inscribed copy of an early reprint of Jack London's prehistoric adventure novel. The Review of Reviews was a reform magazine sister to the progressive British periodical of the same name and a natural choice to publish affordable editions of books by the socialist champion. That champion took a warm interest in the Mexican Revolution and traveled to Mexico in 1914 as a war correspondent for Collier's. Charmian London wrote in her 1921 biography of her husband that he was stricken with dysentery in Vera Cruz and was treated by Dr. Goodman the resident American physician.

This book was one of a set he presented to Goodman in gratitude. London was famously hospitable and his inscription extends a warm invitation to visit his ranch in Sonoma Valley fictionalized as "The Valley of the Moon" in his 1913 novel by that name. London, Jack
BEFORE ADAM. In five issues of Everybody's Magazine
1907. New York: The Ridgway Company October 1906 - February 1907. Original color pictorial wrappers.

First Appearance of this odd prehistoric novel -- in which the nameless narrator describes his strange dreams which he asserts are memories of a prehistoric ancestor named Big Tooth. In writing this London borrowed heavily from Stanley Waterloo's THE STORY OF AB; he replied to charges of plagiarism by acknowledging his debt to that book while insisting that primitive man was within the realm of the public domain. Charmian London later wrote that the novel "went into the universities of the United States as a text-book in Anthropology" Walker & Sisson. The novel is complete in these five issues; upon its conclusion in February 1907 the book itself was published with added illustrations by Charles Livingston Bull. Everybody's Magazine was a hefty publication! -- each issue containing about 140 pages of text plus more than that number in ads. There are many interesting articles such as one filled with photographs of men and boys! engaged in dangerous professions like mining or the construction of skyscrapers tunnels and bridges. The front cover of the first issue shows the same prehistoric footprints that would appear on the front cover of the book; the front cover of the last issue includes a swastika decades before it incurred a new meaning. The issues are in very good-plus condition with minor soil and with nicks in the wrapper edges; an inch-plus of spine paper is chipped away from about half of the spine ends. Walker & Sisson 13 page 15; also see Sisson & Martens p. 34 and Blanck 11903; a Johnson High Spot "The life of prehistoric man so fascinates me that I am compelled to include this book". unknown

BEFORE ADAM
1907. With Numerous Illustrations by Charles Livingston Bull. New York: The Macmillan Company 1907. 4 pp undated ads. Original light brown cloth decorated in brown and lettered in red and white.

First Edition of this odd novel written several years earlier not long after THE CALL OF THE WILD during London's three-year "long sickness." Just as much of that novel consists of Buck's bad dreams so in BEFORE ADAM the nameless narrator describes his strange dreams which he asserts are memories of a prehistoric ancestor named Big Tooth. Like Jack the dreamer in BEFORE ADAM suffered a procession of nightmares full of forests and horrors without end great serpents and prowling monsters; he had lost his true primeval father and his alien stepfather pushed him out of the treehouse where he lived with his suspicious and unprogressive mother into the tooth-and-claw world of prehistory. As an atavistic projection of Jack's distorted vision of his deprived childhood the opening of BEFORE ADAM can serve as a document in Jungian analysis. Sinclair This is a near-fine copy very slight rubbing at the extremities partial darkening of the endpapers; the front free endpaper bears a calligraphic "My Sweetheart Boy". Sisson & Martens p. 34; Blanck 11903; a Johnson High Spot "The life of prehistoric man so fascinates me that I am compelled to include this book". unknown
