Though not published until the year of London's death he had written this during his bad year of 1913. He spent much of that year visiting a dentist finally having all of his upper teeth pulled to halt the pyorrhea raging in his gums; at about the same time his Wolf House burned down two weeks before its completion; and his kidney problems continued to worsen exacerbated by his drinking and his insistence upon eating raw fish and duck. The novel was meant to exalt the splendor of Wolf House and scientific farming and sex." "It is all sex from start to finish" he wrote to the editor of <i>Cosmopolitan</i> "in which no sexual adventure is actually achieved or comes within a million miles of being achieved and in which nevertheless is all the guts of sex coupled with strength. London splits his own role between the two male protagonists the ranch owner Dick Forest and the romantic adventurer Evan Graham. Forest is London's ideal of the rich commercial rancher of the future the owner of 250000 acres worked on strict scientific principles. Evan Graham is another version of dick Forrest but he has chosen to remain a writer and a wanderer. Both men compete for the love of Dick's wife Paula a vision of Charmian as the elegant hostess. She kills herself to solve the dilemma the day before Dick has decided to do the same thing." First Edition with all points according to Sisson page 77 The book is in Very Good- condition and is lacking a dust jacket. There is some light bumping rubbing and wear to the spine ends and corners. There is some beginning fraying as well. The lettering and decoration on the spine of the book has been mostly rubbed away. The foredge of the front cover of the book has several small spots of color loss and there is rubbing to the blue color on the front cover as well. The text pages are clean and bright. There is foxing to the endpapers. "The Mutiny of the Elsinore is a novel by the American writer Jack London first published in 1914. After death of the captain the crew of a ship split between the two senior surviving mates. During the conflict the narrator develops as a strong character rather as in The Sea-Wolf. It also includes some strong right views which were part of London's complex world-view. The novel is partially based on London's voyage around Cape Horn on the Dirigo in 1912. " from Wikipedia . Super tight and internally near fine but gilt spine lettering almost entirely rubbed off and while ivory and gilt front board lettering remains strong the blue pictorial waves that fill much of the front board are largely chipped off though the large sailship rising in the distance remains sharp. A tight and nice first edition of this fact-inspired seafaring novel informed by London's 1912 journey around Cape Horn. Spine lettering nearly gone and front board pictorial element heavily chipped but internally a quite decent and tight first. The Macmillan Company hardcover

1914. London: Mills & Boon 1914. 432 pp ads. Original dark green cloth.<br/> <br/> First English Edition. This tale serialized as "Sea Gangsters" involves a mutinous voyage around Cape Horn. London hoped to explain his own "Snark" voyage's failure by laying the blame on Anglo-Saxons' problems with the tropics per the theories he had read in Woodruff's EFFECTS OF TROPICAL LIGHT ON WHITE MEN. Jack wrote THE ELSINORE soon after he and Charmian returned from his "Millergraph" trip to New York City; their five-month return was on the clipper ship "Dirigo" out of Baltimore around Cape Horn in mid-1912. His last acts on shore were to shave his head bald and to have a photograph taken of himself standing by Poe's grave. Since there was no alcohol on board Jack went through withdrawal from his dependence upon it and proclaimed that he was not an alcoholic -- though Charmian knew that would last only until the pain in his kidneys and bowels would again become unbearable.Sinclair Jack with major gastrointestinal problems of his own watched the ship's captain slowly die of stomach cancer during the voyage. Charmian became pregnant again but soon after they arrived back in Glen Ellen she miscarried -- confirming Jack's fear that he would have no son and heir for the ranch. And so began Jack's new "period of disgust." This is the English edition bearing the same 1914 date as the New York edition but published four months later in January 1915 and containing the same dramatic color frontispiece. The reason the American edition has a detailed colorful binding and the English one does not is that England was already at war. Excepting that the volume is slightly askew this is a fine copy.
