1911 3 letters and 1913 4 letters; all on letterhead of the Institution of Naval Architects of which Dana was the Secretary. Six of the letters are 4to 1 p; the other is 12mo 1 p. All good on lightly aged paper. All bearing the Society's stamp and most docketed. On a variety of subjects: a proposed paper by 'Herr Frahm' the use by the Institution of the Royal Society's library for a council meeting the delivery to the Society of a 'model tank that is coming from Germany' 'the reader of the paper is sending his representative over from Germany to superintend matters' and a 'Proposed Memorial to the late Sir William White' 'with reference to Mr. Bailey Saunders and Mr. C. R. Graves. Robison Reed & Shuttleworth merchants. Manuscript ‘General statement of the concern of Messrs. Robison Reed & Shuttleworth from June 1st. 1803 to December 1st. 1804.’ On a single extremely large piece of paper. This is a document which would certainly repay investigation. No record of this firm of merchants has been discovered or even of where they traded. Robison is a Scottish name and there is an undated reference to a ‘James Robison merchant in Dumfries’; most Shuttleworth’s hail from the north-east of England and there is mention of a John Shuttleworth in Manchester in 1820. Other clues in the document suggest a London location: in 1793 Napper and Co. were listed as ‘Dyers and Callico Printers Old-street-square’; ‘Clayton & Scott’ were solicitors of Lincoln’s Inn; and in 1810 a John Serrell dissolved his partnership with Charles Lickfold ‘as Carpenters and Builders and Corn and Coal Dealers at Camberwell in the County of Surrey’. On one side of a good piece of laid paper 102 x 68 cm i.e. three and a third feet by two. Folded six times into a 26 x 17 cm packet on the front of which is written ‘James Robinson Esqre.’ In fair condition with a number of closed tears along the folds easily repairable and with no loss of text whatever and the reverse the outside of the packet into which it is folded rather grubby. The accountant William McRea has signed and dated the statement at bottom right. We at least know what the firm traded in: at bottom left are the details of the ‘Merchandise’: ‘Coffee / Spice &c / Hops / Tea / Sugar’. The firm was clearly a substantial concern: the balance to 30 December 1804 was £17 176 10s 4d. The rest of the document consists of the cash book with the customary double-entry arrangement of credits and debits and a list of the accounts of the drawers: William Bennett James Bradley Clayton & Scott Henry Clarke Three pr. Rosa Hollay Helena Rubinstein's London manager successor of Suzanne Verdi 'Beauty Specialist' Old Bond Street London. Typed Letter Signed 'Rosa Hollay Suzanne Verdi' to journaist 'Miss Coury' with Autograph Postscript
On letterhead of 44 Old Bond Street W.1. London 30 September 1931. The Sunday Times 20 March 2002 carries an article by Ann Treneman 'The real face of Rubinstein' discussing the discovery among Hollay's papers of her correspondence with Helena Rubinstein. The correspondence was made use of by Lindy Woodhead in her 2017 book 'War Paint: Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein: Their Lives their Times Their Rivalry'. Hollay was Rubinstein's London manager from 1914. In 1929 she severed her connection with Rubinstein announcing in The Times 10 April 1929 'that she has entirely severed her connexion with the establishment which she managed for so many years and has ACQUIRED the BUSINESS of SUZANNE VERDI 4 OLD BOND STREET' Hollay was Verdi's 'successor' but in 1933 the firm could still be listed as 'Verdi Mme. Suzanne Beauty Specialist 44 Old Bond II st.' On 8 August 1934 The Times carried a 'false report of death' for Hollay. And on 16 October 1942 she vacated the premises continuing to deal with her High Society customers from her home 31 Kensington Square. 1p. 12mo. In good condition lightly aged. She begins by apologising for sending a typed letter 'it is late and I can type more than I can write!' and thanking her for an enjoyable evening 'I am afraid I was dull company but after all it is good to feel at peace with ones companion – don't you think so'. References follow to Coury's 'little enamel case' a day 'of warts moles hairs etc' 'this weeks Queens' whether Coury would really 'like a block of me in your pages'. The letter concludes: 'Please don't forget to make use of this place just when and as you please. Keep a frock or case here and change and titivate when you wish. It would make me happy to know you were finding this little Home of Beauty of some use to you. You must try and save fatigue all you can said the pot calling the kettle black!' Autograph postscript: 'You did look so amazingly handsome last night in spite of fatigue.' On letterhead of 44 Old Bond Street, W.1. [London] 30 September 1931. unknown
