‎Berlin/New York, de Gruyter, 2011. 398 S. mit 10 s/w-Abb. 8°. OPp.‎

‎Pluralisierung & Autorität ; Bd. 24. - Sehr gut erhalten. ‎S & J Fuller, printsellers, 34 Rathbone Place, London [English social history; Georgian fashion; Regency London]:‎

‎Georgian London. Two lithographic engravings: companion pieces both headed 'Casualties of London Street Walking' and titled 'A Faint Impression' and 'A Strong Impression' showing the fine clothes of fashionable figures sullied by street hawkers.‎

‎Both engravings published on 2 October 1826 by S. & J. Fuller 34 Rathbone Place London. The two engravings in good condition with light signs of age and with 'A Faint Impression' with some offsetting in light pink not entirely displeasing. Both headed above the image 'Casualties of London Street Walking' with the title and publication details below the image. ONE: 'A Faint Impression.' Dimensions: image 23.5 x 18.5 cm; plate 27 x 20 cm; paper 29 x 22 cm. A fight outside a hat shop between two boys one holding a tray of meat and the other a wooden board with food and drink results in the light soiling of the clothes of an indignant middle-aged couple the man in top hat whiskers and breeches and the woman in bonnet and frills. The amused milliner looks on from the doorway of his shop. TWO: 'A Strong Impression.' Dimensions: image 24 x 19 cm; plate 27.5 x 21.5 cm; paper 28.5 x 22.5 cm. A confrontation in front of a printshop between a chimneysweep and a boy selling pies has more serious consequences for another couple more sharply dressed than the last. The gentleman in cutaway jacket has his trousers badly soiled by the falling chimneysweep's bag of soot while the lady receives a bag of pies in the face from the other boy. Two gentlemen and the printseller look on horrified. Uncommon: the only copies found are coloured ones in the Guildhall Library London and London Metropolitan Archives. See Image sl. too large for scanner. Both engravings published on 2 October 1826 by S. & J. Fuller, 34 Rathbone Place, London. hardcover‎

‎S T [The Guardian Society for the Preservation of Public Morals, London] / Abraham John VALPY (Ed)‎

‎Printed pamphlet 'An Address to the Guardian Society London 1817' by 'S. T.' - The Pamphleteer Vol. XI. No. XXI.‎

‎12mo paginated 225-252. Extracted from volume XI of 'The Pamphleteer' London: A. J. Valpy Tooke's Court Chancery Lane. 1818 1817. Text is clear and complete. On lightly-aged paper. Title page reads: 'An Address to the Guardian Society. London. 1817. No. XXI. Pam. Vol. XI. P'. The following gives an impression of the sceptical tone in which this pamphlet is written. 'Your Society is declared to be "for the preservation of public morals" a most praise-worthy and highly commendable institution. But how do you propose to preserve the public morals Why by "providing temporary asylums for prostitutes removed by the operation of the laws from the public streets and affording to such of them as are destitute employment and relief." This may be very well so far as it goes; but it is certainly going a very short way towards the preservation of public morals.' Both this reprint from Valpy's magazine 'The Pamphleteer' and the original are scarce with the only copies of either on COPAC at the British Library Cambridge and LSE. A. J. ‎S W Fores [Samuel William Fores] (c1761-1838), engraver and printseller of Georgian London [Marianne Spencer Hudson [nee Stanhop‎

‎S. W. Fores engraver and printseller. A hand-coloured engraving by S. W. Fores captioned ‘A Visit to Atherford Abbey. / There goes a flower of a Youth!!’ satirizing a scene from the novel ‘Almack’s’ by Marianne Spencer Stanhope Hudson.‎

‎‘Pubd. Feby 10th 1827 / by S. W. Fores Piccadilly’ London. See Fores’ entry in the Oxford DNB. Almack’s Assembly Rooms in King Street was the most fashionable venue for the dandies and belles of Regency London. The present item deftly hand-coloured in pink red light and dark blue and yellow is 14 x 10.5 cm in a grey border extending out to 16.5 x 13 cm. Within the head of the border is ‘Illustrations to Almack’s Page 16.’ and within the foot is the caption with Fores’ publication details at bottom-right. There are other illustrations by Fores to the novel and it may be that they were issued as a series. In any case the present item is extremely scarce no other copy having been located at the British Library British Museum Prints and Drawings or elsewhere. The present copy is in good condition but there is discoloration and wear to the grey border. ‘Almack’s / A Novel’ had been published anonymously in London in 1826 by ‘Saunders and Otley Public Library Conduit Street.’ It appears to be the only novel that Marianne Spencer Hudson published. The passage referred to in the caption appears on p.21 of that edition: ‘ “There goes a flower of a youth†said Isaac to his ancient spouse; “he’ll make a figure wherever he goes my life on it and my blessing go with him.†/ “Amen†said old Molly wiping her eyes upon her blue checked apron. / Colonel Montague had indeed been the flower of his family .’. The scene as depicted by Fores is of a young gentleman Colonel Montagu dressed in the height of fashion with hat in hand looking at an armorial shield on the wall of a castle or hall while he is stared at by a bespectackled rake of an old woman Molly hands raised while her short and plump knock-kneed husband gestures to the young man while looking up at his wife with flushed cheeks. The overall effect is deliberately absurd. See image. ‘Pubd. Feby 10th 1827 / by S. W. Fores Piccadilly’ [London]. unknown‎
