London: Printed for John Whiston 1750. 222pp. Octavo. Extracted from pamphlet volume and disbound. Title and verso of ad leaf rather darkened and smudged old creases; just a sound copy. One of several contemporary printings of this work for Whiston priority unknown; it was quickly reprinted for other booksellers and in Dublin and elsewhere and saw several reprints in later years. "After the earthquakes of 1750 Sherlock published a 'Pastoral Letter' of which 'ten thousand were sold in two days and fifty thousand have been subscribed for since the first two editions" - DNB quoting Walpole. Not unlike certain extremist religious eccentrics of our own times Sherlock did not miss the opportunity to interpret very natural if unfortunate occurrences as evidence of divine displeasure at such things as plays operas music dancing cock-fighting and prize-fighting during Lent and the common availability in the city's streets of novels "vile abominable Pictures of Lewdness" and "Books in the Instruction of the Unexperienced in all the Mysteries of Iniquity." Published and distributed by the Simmons Bedding Company Limited of Canada and the London Life Insurance Company to employees detailing various aspects of the group health and insurance benefits afforded to them as employees. Included are specific details relating to weekly income benefits in the case of disability or while under the care of a physician. Remarkably - though unsurprisingly - the insurance plan offers different generally lower weekly income benefits to their female employees in contrast to benefits afforded to their male counterparts. Three pages entitled "Schedule of Operations" exhaustively lists all manner of medical operations and procedures accompanied with their precise costs. Sections include: Amputations ranges from $10.00 for a finger to $180.00 for thigh-at hip Abdomen Breast mastectomies biopsies abscess Chest Dislocations Eye Treatment of Fractures Genito-Urinary removal of kidney tumours of bladder prostatectomy Obstetrical Orthopedic Operations Varicose Veins Tumours and Cysts et al. An important ephemeral document published prior to the establishment of a national health care framework and preceded the struggles by Tommy Douglas and the CCF which eventually culminated with the passage of the National Health Act of 1984. 13 January 1975; on letterhead of Quarry Manor Headington Oxford. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The recipient Philip Dosse was proprietor of Hansom Books publisher of a stable of seven arts magazines including Books and Bookmen and Plays and Players. See ‘Death of a Bookman’ by the novelist Sally Emerson editor of ‘Books and Bookmen’ at the time of Dosse’s suicide in Standpoint magazine October 2018. The present item is 2pp 12mo. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Signed ‘Simon Nowell Smith’. He has found Dosse’s letter on his return from holiday that day and states that he is sorry that he ‘cannot review Tim Barnes’s book on Anglo-American copyright for you as I am already committed to the Book Collector’. He is ‘not at all keen to review books nowadays’ but will bear in mind Dosse’s suggestion and let him know if he hears of ‘some forthcoming book in my field which is too expensive for me to buy!’ He ends by stating that he is ‘more interested in acquiring the book than in a fee’. 13 January 1975; on letterhead of Quarry Manor, Headington, Oxford. unknown

Simond and Hankey London bankers involved in the West Indian sugar and slave trade. Two manuscript bills in French ‘A Messieurs Messrs. Ante. & Dan. Bierens a Amsterdam’ each signed by ‘Pre: Simond’ and endorsed by ‘Jean Hankey’.
Both dated from ‘Londres ce 15e. Decembre 1758’ London. With the surge of interest in the slave trade attention has lately been directed at Simond and Hankey a ‘past constituent’ of the NatWest Bank. These two items are nice artefacts of the firm. Both are in good condition lightly aged and laid out in the same way with the bill written out on one side of a 22.5 x 9 cm slip of laid paper. One is for ‘Deux Cent Livres Sterling a trente quatre Sols neuf deniers de gros’ and the other for ‘Cent Soixante Sterling a Trente quatre Sols dix deniers de gros’. Both drawn on ‘Messrs. Vernede & Co’. Each signed ‘Pre: Simond’ and both endorsed by ‘Jean Hankey’ with instructions in French for the bill of £160 to be paid to the account of ‘Messieurs Gme. Van Brienen & fils’ and that of £200 to ‘Messieurs Geo. Clifford & fils’. Both dated from ‘Londres ce 15e. Decembre 1758’ [London]. unknown
