‎Minor browning to edges and pastedowns. - Quires partially not opened, apparently in parts unread copy. - Prevoius owner's stamp to title (German biologist & theologician), old owner's ink signature to title (Adolf Dal, Norwegian teacher & geologist). - Externally and internally very good and clean copy of the early reprint edition; first edition was 1871, second (revised) edition 1874. - "Darwin himself and some of his children edited many of the large number of revised editions, some extensively. In late 1873, Darwin tackled a new edition of the Descent of Man. Initially, he offered Wallace the work of assisting him, but, when Emma found out, she had the task given to their son George, so Darwin had to write apologetically to Wallace. Huxley assisted with an update on ape-brain inheritance, which Huxley thought "pounds the enemy into a jelly... though none but anatomists" would know it. The manuscript was completed in April 1874 and published on 13 November that year. This has been the edition most commonly reprinted after Darwin's death and to the present day." (Wikipedia). ‎Les vues doptiques sont un type particulier destampes populaires publiées en Europe au XVIIIe siècle. Ces estampes étaient une forme de divertissement destinée à être vue à travers des appareils appelés « machines optiques », « optiques », « zograscopes ». Ces estampes étaient exposées par des forains ambulants dans les rues de toute lEurope et étaient également collectionnées par les professionnels et les classes supérieures qui possédaient des machines optiques chez eux. Il y avait une grande curiosité pour lapparence des villes européennes non visitées et des lieux exotiques aux confins du globe, et ces estampes étaient lun des seuls moyens pour le grand public davoir un aperçu du monde. Les machines optiques utilisées pour ces gravures étaient équipées d'une lentille qui améliorait pour les spectateurs le grossissement et la perception de la profondeur tridimensionnelle des scènes représentées. Un miroir était souvent utilisé pour que les gravures en perspective puissent être vues à plat, et dans ces cas, les images étaient vues à l'envers. Il n'est donc pas rare que les scènes représentées soient dessinées à l'envers, et il y a souvent aussi un titre imprimé à l'envers en haut, permettant aux spectateurs de le lire rapidement. Il y avait généralement un texte supplémentaire au bas des gravures, souvent en plusieurs langues, qui pouvait être lu par l'opérateur de l'optique au bénéfice de son public ......... rare gravure ........... en bon état (good condition). en bon état‎

In his obituary of Low’s partner Robin Waterfield Independent 12 February 2002 James Fergusson describes Low as a ‘Scottish Polish Jewish bouquiniste’. The recipient Andrew Block’s obituary in ‘The Private Library’ was subtitled ‘the doyen of booksellers’; his business was established in 1911. Plain orange-yellow card with Reynolds Stone oval medallion letterhead. Signed ‘David’ in red ink. Addressed with postmark and stamp to ‘Mr. Andrew Block / 30 Barter Street / London W.C.1.’ He enquires whether the ‘coloured drawings on rice paper’ he is sending are ‘merely Chinese’. He has ‘a quarto volue with 20 of ’em loose’ and asks whether it would be ‘any use bringing ’em up with me on my next call upon the town’. Ends: ‘But if it is only Jap. prints you want no need to reply. Meantime kindest ’77 Wishes to you and to Meg’.
