Horace Sequeira actor portrait painter and make-up artist. Four items: Autograph Duologue titled 'Seeing the Coronation'; duplicated duologue titled 'A Quiet Day's Sketching in Sussex'; and two price lists.
All four undated one circa 1953 and the others earlier. One item from 5 Belsize Crescent Hampstead NW3 London and two others from 17 Welbeck Mansions Inglewood Rd NW6. Sequeira was born in Aldgate. In the years following his service in the London Regiment during the First World War he acted in Shakespeare at the Old Vic and he would continue as an actor into the age of film and television. In addition to acting Sequeira taught including a youthful Peter Cushing at Guildhall School of Music and Drama painted and in 1953 published a book on stage make-up. The present four items all undated are in good condition lightly aged. ONE: Autograph duologue titled 'Seeing the Coronation'. 5pp. foolscap 8vo. With revised conclusion 1p. 12mo. The six leaves pinned together. The five foolscap leaves carry duplicated pages of another dialogue on their other sides. A humorous interchange between 'Alice' and an increasingly-hysterical 'Maud' in the London crowd to see Queen Elizabeth II's 1953 coronation procession. TWO: Duplicated typed dialogue titled 'A Quiet Day's Sketching in Sussex'. 4pp. 4to. On four leaves. Sewn into makeshift brown paper wraps with the following on the cover: 'A Quiet Day's Sketching in Sussex Horace Sequeira 5 Belsize Crescent Hampstead N.W 3 Miss G. Russell'. At head of first page: 'The Characters are two artists Miss Vandyke Brown and Miss Rose Madder Both very arty.' THREE: Printed price-list of 'Original Monologues Duologues and Sketches by Horace Sequeira May be obtained from 17 Welbeck Mansions Inglewood Road N.W.6 Phone: HAMpstead 0968'. 4pp. 4to. Bifolium. Engraved titles with woodcut vignettes; more than 3000 pp.; 175 engraved plates several larger folded of which 91 finely hand-coloured; three folding tables several text figures. Contemporary uniform half calf over marbled boards. Spines with five gilt-ornamented bands; compartments with gilt title and volume number. Speckled edges. = A very rare set with all plates published of the most important British botanical journal of its day and a showcase for the talents of some of the greatest botanical artists then at work. As is often the case this set is a mixed edition: the first three volumes are second and third editions the remaining volumes first editions. The present work includes a good selection of plates taken from the fruit paintings William Hooker no relation to Sir William. Hooker served as botanical artist to the Horticultural Society now the Royal Horticultural Society from 1812 until he retired due to ill-health in 1820. According to Blunt and Stearn 1990 a study of the originals in the Lindley Library at the RHS reveal him to have been "one of the greatest pomological artists of all time". There are also fine examples of the work of a Miss Drake and Mrs Withers. Several uncoloured plates and title pages cleaned. Some few plates a bit trimmed. Provenance: Armorial bookplate "Murus aeneus concientia sana" of the British plant collector and breeder Edmund Giles Loder 1849-1920 mounted on the front pastedowns. "He developed hybrid rhododendrons from crosses between R. fortunei and R. griffithianum. The plants were named the Loderi hybrids and group in his honour. Three Loderi King George Loderi Pink Diamond and Loder's White have received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. He developed the garden at his home at Leonardslee extensively" Wikipedia. Some foxing and offsetting restricted to several plain plates only. A few plates shaved as usual. Many of the b&w plates have the engravers' and artists' names while only one of the color plates does "Monopsis Conspicua" printed and engraved by W. Hooker after R. A. Salisbury. However according to Gordon Dunthorne William Hooker no relation to Sir William did the majority of the plates in the first five volumes "including many fine fruit plates which outnumber those of flowers . the fruit prints in particular comparing with the best of Hooker's work." Quarto. 28 x 21.5 cm. 2 XXIV VIII 186 185-186 187-369 372-410 10 28 pp. Disbound: Bookblock is sound with old marbled boards detached yet present but lacking the ffep. and backstrip. Some light foxing to engraved title-page and a few of the other b&w plates with offsetting to facing text pages; otherwise the plates and text are quite clean. Ex library with minimal markings only a cancelled bookplate on front pastedown and a blind embossed seal on p. 1 of text and none to plates. A complete copy in very good condition that needs to be rebound. Published between 1807 and 1848 the Transactions of the Horticultural Society of London are esteemed for the very high standard of their production especially in their plates and for their interesting and useful content.
