J Thierry, teacher of French in Georgian London [French pronunciation]:
J. Thierry teacher of French in Georgian London. Autograph Letter Signed 'I. Therry' in French to the editor of the Court Journal regarding his publication in London of a work on French pronunciation '
40 Great Marlborough Street London. 25 May 1829. 3pp. 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition on aged and worn paper. Addressed with red wax seal on reverse of second leaf 'To the Editor of the Court Journal.' The letter concerns a work published by Thierry in London in 1829 and titled in English 'Forty-four lines by the aid of which the pronunciation of the French may be learned in a few hours' and in French 'Quarante-quatre vers par le moyen desquels on peut apprendre la prononciation française en quelques heures'. The only two copies on COPAC at Glasgow and Oxford. No copy in the Bibliothèque Nationale. He explains that the work is the fruit of long experience teaching. He discusses some 'difficulté à vaincre' and the 'sacrifices pécuniaires' that he has made in publishing the work himself. He hopes for the favour of a review and in a long postscript refers to the '15 ans que j'ai habité Londre alternativemt. avec Paris'. 40 Great Marlborough Street [London]. 25 May 1829. unknown

London; New York: T. Werner Laurie; Mills & Boon Limited; William Heinemann Limited; D. Appleton-Century Company Incorporated 1908-1939. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 5.5". Not Stated. A lovely variety of fiction from prominent American author Jack London including two pleasing frontispieces one of which is in colour. Collection comprised of:1908 Before Adam;1914 John Barleycorn or Alcoholic Memoirs - early edition;1915 The Mutiny of the Elsinore - early edition;1915 The Jacket - second edition;1929 The Iron Heel - very scarce edition;1936 Martin Eden;1939 The Night-Born and Other Stories. All volumes bound in the publisher's original cloth.John Barleycorn and The Mutiny of the Elsinore both contain a frontispiece The Mutiny of the Elsinore's being in colour. These editions of The Iron Heel and The Jacket do not contain the colour frontispiece. The Mutiny of the Elsinore and The Jacket each feature over thirty pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. John Barleycorn and The Iron Heel also contain advertisements only in a smaller number. Before Adam undated dated from a copy held by the British Library.A wide selection of works from prominent American writer Jack London best known for The Call of the Wild and White Fang. Notable novels in this collection include early dystopia The Iron Heel and Before Adam an abstract exploration of life before evolution. All volumes bound in the publisher's original cloth. Ex-libris stamp to front free endpaper and title page of John Barleycorn. Signed by a previous owner to the front free endpaper of Martin Eden and The Jacket. Externally smart with slight bumping and rubbing leading to minor loss of cloth and a few small tears to the spine head and tail of some editions. A few marks to boards and subtle sunning towards the spine of The Night-Born and Other Stories. Internally generally firmly bound front hinges of several works a little weak resulting in the first few pages being a little delicate more so to The Iron Heel which has also been reinforced with tape. The rear paste down endpapers and last two pages of The Night-Born and Other Stories show evidence of worming the book being otherwise unaffected. A relatively bright and clean collection with the occasional spot heavier to the first and last few pages. Very Good T. Werner Laurie; Mills & Boon, Limited; William Heinemann, Limited; D.
