Naass Teaching Himself to Read / An Odyssey of the North Three Sheet Poster
Bosworth Inc 1914. Ephemera. Near fine. A terrific large poster for a 1914 silent film based on a Jack London short story. London's story of the same name published in the January 1900 issue of The Atlantic is set in Klondike-era Alaska. One of the central characters Naass is an Aleut whose great-great grandfather was a shipwrecked White European. <br /> <br /> Naass describes himself as "a chief and the son of a chief born between a sunset and a rising on the dark seas in my father’s oomiak." He left the Aleutian Island and came to mainland Alaska. "I turned away from the ocean which never rests and went among the lands where the trees the houses and the mountains sit always in one place and do not move. I journeyed far and came to learn many things even to the way of reading and writing from books." This last is the basis for the image on the poster. <br /> <br /> Hobart Bosworth wrote with Hettie Grey Baker directed and starred in the film version. The poster shows Bosworth as Naass—but looking rather more indigenous than he does in photographs—sitting on a dock and writing in a child's school workbook. The image is a more sympathetic depiction of a Native American that was common at the time.<br /> <br /> The film was released on September 3 1914 by Paramount Pictures. The upper right corner includes an "Authenticated Film" logo for authorized adaptations of Jack London's work. This logo may have resulted from the fact that competing film versions of The Sea Wolf were released in 1913. Bosworth was London's preferred actor and director for film adaptations.<br /> <br /> This is a three-sheet movie poster measuring 42-1/4 by 82 inches assembled from two large stone lithographs on paper mounted to a cloth backing. An exceptional example linen backed with only minor restoration in the margins and the tiniest bit of overpainting to the yellow background at the top. A rare poster. Bosworth, Inc unknown

Extremities dust-soiled and a trifle rubbed some loss to spine. Substantial loss to foot of title touching imprint with loss of price occasional marginal chipping and small ink spots to text tear to one plate partial naive colouring of four plates. A charming and amusing poem first printed in 1811 celebrating the vibrancy and variation of England's capital accompanied by several attractive views of the city's landmarks including Westminster Abbey Primrose Hill the Tower and St. Paul's Cathedral. London: 1860. 380 x 390 cm. A magnificent wall map of London. Engraved over thirty sheets joined backed onto linen trimmed with green silk and mounted on original rollers. The whole housed within original wooden case measuring roughly 420 x 15 x 14 cm. Original wash hand colour demarcating the gas company districts the names of which have been handwritten in bold black ink. The map shows the extents from Crouch End down to Streatham and Plaistow across to Wormwood Scrubs. Scale - 12 inches to the mile. The altitudes given in feet at numerous intervals almost at every inch. Small tear within map towards upper edge. Fabric tape repair on reverse side of upper right corner. One of the finial posts missing from the lower roller. The signature of Thomas Henry Sutton Sotheron-Estcourt "Chairman of the Select Comittee House of Commons" dated 14th Aug. 1860 appears in manuscript to the lower left corner beneath the title. Sotheron-Estcourt was M.P. for North Wiltshire and briefly held the office of Home Secretary in the previous year. The title repeated in manuscript on the linen verso on the reverse side of the upper right corner. Adjacent to this a manuscript note reads: "Deposited in the Clerk of the Peace's Office on the 22nd August 1860". The Clerk of the Peace was a semi judicial position appointed to the county council one the main tasks of the position was maintenance of local legal records. In passing the Metropolis Gas Act the House of Commons regulated the rivalling gas companies operating across London: demarcating the districts that they could supply outlined on the map establishing a standard unit of measurement for energy usage candle power and setting a maximum price per unit. The Home Secretary was effectively appointed to the role of ombudsman by the Act. [London: 1860] unknown

The present series of plates were also published by Robert Morden and Philip Lea sometime between 1687 and 1692. A total of 31 plates have been identified by B. Adams London Illustrated 1604-1851 but the 31st plate of Clarendon House only exists in the GLC History library copy Adams and this copy is not considered incomplete without it. The plate of the Custom House bears the name of John Dunstall who could be the drawer of the originals of the etchings. He was aa drawing-master in Blackfriars who was mostly a follower of Hollar whose work provides the model for eight further plates of the series.<br /><br />The Seller issue has only appeared once at auction with the title page in a different state. London: Cha. F. Cheffins 1835. Map. Ex-Library. 29 3/8" x 61.5". Linen-backed map done on two sheets. Map printed in black pink yellow and green hand-colored. Housed in a 8" x 5.5" green case with gilt lettering and a gilt device on the front board the front of the case states "London & Birmingham Railway. Map of the Line. above the device Incorporated 6th May 1833". A portion of the map backed with green goat in order to have it enter and exit the case more smoothly. A large and beautiful representation of the London to Birmingham railway line with the stops outlined at the bottom edge of the map. With two engraved vignettes showing the depots in Birmingham and in London. An early example of this captivating map. A bookplate and one stamp on the verso of the map otherwise no markings. The bookplate states that the map was a gift donated by James J. Hill a wealthy bibliophile from St. Paul to the University of Wisconsin Library. The map has three small spots of loss to its folds. With an engraved plate of the tower which sometimes is placed as a frontispiece two engraved plans on one plate and two engraved reproductions on one plate. Additionally there is the folding panorama as the frontispiece to the Badajoz volume. 8vo contemporary style calf the spine with double gilt ruled bands the compartments with panel designs of gilt corner work and central fleurs-de-lys red morocco lettering label gilt. 2 255 5 pp. plus plates; 4 53 pp.; 12 pp. Neat bookplate and name on preliminary blank and slight offsetting from one plate but fine in attractive binding. FIRST EDITION OF ALL THREE WORKS. The books here included are all considered quite scarce indeed. Few copies appear in the marketplace and few are in collections world wide. Cléry was the King's valet and this is a first hand account. It is considered the most important period writing on the captivity of Louis XV. It is bound with two other very scarce works A Correct Account Of The Visit Of His Royal Highness The Prince Regent And His Illustrious Guests To The University And City Of Oxford In June 1814. To Which Is Added The English Poems Recited On The Occasion; Accompanied by Some General Remarks.
