Philadelphia/New York: J. B. Lippincott Company. Very Good. c.1938. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket tight clean copy mild shelfwear to bottom edge. Rather scarce novel illuminating a "daring" theme that was "completely new to fiction" -- i.e. artificial insemination. "Cindy Gaylord was in her second year of college when tragedy broke the rhythm of her young life. She was beautiful and rich but neither of these assets was of help to her when her father was murdered. The sordidness of the trial and the defection of her fiance brought complete disillusionment and Cindy's reaction to the corroding bitterness was utter revulsion toward men. She inherited her father's flair for finance and his deep love of music which offered her much solace in her dark hours. A chance discussion gave Cindy her first knowledge of trends in modern science toward reproduction through scientific means. When Mrs. Gaylord died Cindy felt she must have someone to care for and love and in desperation turned to Science." And what do we make of an author named Wagner who writes a book in which a music-loving mother cites "Die Niebelungen" and names her scientifically-implanted child "Siegfried" I took a good close look just to see if this book was "translated from the German" but nope; and according to the copyright page the author's full name was Dorothy Wagner Nelson. . J. B. Lippincott Company hardcover books
Good. The high school and college scrapbook of Dorothy Wagner dated to the late 1920s and early 1930s. Scrapbook contains pre-printed sections and illustrations throughout by Berenice Hunt and Elizabeth Owen and published by W.C. Horn Bro. & Co. The scrapbook has tipped-in invitations programs newspaper clippings and many dance cards most of these have manuscript notations around them by Wagner. The scrapbook is dated from around 1926 to 1931 and contains items from Wagner's high school and university. Scrapbook has around 100 leaves about half have been used; flexible boards have "My School Days Memory Book" and an illustration on front cover. Overall good. Boards have light wear to edges and moderate soiling; leaves have moderate toning light to moderate soiling and many leaves have offsetting from tipped in items. Dorothy Wagner graduated Beaumont High School in St Louis Missouri in 1926 and University of Missouri in 1931. At the University of Missouri she received a bachelors of science in education. She was a member and President of the Mermaids Club a women's swimming club and a member of Alpha Chi Omega. There are many tipped in programs from banquets plays and other events taking place at the University one of which contains small photos of two women one of them is might be Dorothy. Other items include a page full of autographs from her senior class certification cards from the American Red Cross Life Saving Service a ticket from her first "airship ride" dated to August 25th 1929 wedding invitations dance cards that are full with names of partners a few newspaper clippings and graduation cards. This sweet book records memories from what seemed like a fun time in Dorothy Wagner's life. ; B & W Illustrations; Oblong Small 4to 9" - 11" tall . hardcover books
