Bartolome de las Casas emerges here as a practical reformer waging a half-century crusade for the rights of the American Indians. His early colonial schemes overblown in most biographies are treated briskly but with emphasis on a neglected source and candor about their latent ambition and commercialism. His central achievement-the instigation and defense of the New laws-is illustrated b new evidence on Casas' role and his struggles as a bishop. But it is the years of vigorous retirement that reveal a Fray Bartolome only dimly known till now. Casas' brush with the Inquisition over his publications his prolonged battle against perpetual encomiendas his completing the History of the Indies and his passing on his work to devoted successors-all are given proper place in his career.
