Carta tratta dell'Atlas sive cosmographicae meditationes de fabrica mundi curato da Hendrick Hondius. Basata sulla carta di Giovanni Antonio Magini pubblicata nel 1620 a Bologna. Nel 1604, Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) - probabilmente tramite Cornelis Claesz - acquistò le matrici in rame dell'Atlas sive cosmographicae meditationes de fabrica mundi di Gerard Mercator all’asta. Aggiunse circa 40 mappe, comprese nuove mappe dei continenti e importanti mappe regionali delle Americhe, prima di pubblicare una nuova edizione dell’opera, nel 1606, in concorrenza con il Theatrum Orbis Terrarum di Ortelius. Poiché molte delle mappe erano più aggiornate, la raccolta di Mercator & Hondius sostituì effettivamente il Theatrum di Ortelius. In 1604, Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) – probably trought Cornelis Claesz - bought the copperplates of Mercator’s Atlas sive cosmographicae meditationes de fabrica mundi at the auction of Gerard Jr.’s effects. He added about 40 maps, including new maps of the Continents and important regional maps of the Americas, before publishing a new edition of the Atlas, in 1606, in competition with Ortelius’ Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. As many of the maps were more up-to-date, the Mercator-Hondius Atlas effectively superseded Ortelius’ Theatrum. This atlas from 1606 include all 107 maps from the 1595 edition, as well as 37 new maps, skillfully engraved by Hondius, of various authors. The second edition of the Mercator-Hondius atlas followed as soon as 1607/08. The first edition in another language, French, was put on the market in 1609. Apparently this one was regarded as the third edition, because in 1611 Editio Quarta appeared with a total of 150 maps. After the death of Jodocus Hondius in 1612 his widow and sons continued the publication of the Atlas. For instance Jodocus Junior (1594-1629) produced several new editions of the Editio Quarta between 1613 and 1619, each with the same 150 maps. Finally in 1619 the last edition of this atlas followed, to which six new maps were added. After 1620 the publication of the Atlas was continued by Henricus Hondius (ca. 1596/97-1651), the second son of Jodocus senior. Various editions appeared, in 1623, 1628 and 1630. Henricus Hondius was the first to make some real changes: in the 1628 edition he provided some Mercator maps with his own name. In 1630, when he was probably already cooperating with his brother-in- law Johannes Janssonius, Henricus added nine new maps. The maps of Italy, derived from Magini, were first printed in the Theatrum Italiae in quo Eius Regna, Domina, Ducatus, Et Speciatim Illorum Provinciae, Tabulis Accuratissimis, Iam, De Novo in Lucem Editio, Describunter, Quorum Sequens Page Indicabit, printed in Amsterdam by Hendrick Hondius in 1636. Although imprinted by Hondius, the collection also contains maps signed by Johannes Janssonius (see Koeman, Atlas Neerlandici, vol. II pp. 379-380, Me 43). Copperplate, good condition.

Carta del territorio romagnolo tratta dal grande atlante del Janssonius.La carta è una fedele derivazione dell'opera di Magini. Esemplare con l'indirizzo di Janssonius e testo francese al verso. Joannes Janssonius, figlio dell'editore di Arnhem Jan Janssen, sposò Elisabeth Hondius, figlia di Jodocus Hondius, ad Amsterdam nel 1612. Dopo il suo matrimonio, si stabilì in questa città come libraio ed editore di materiale cartografico. Nel 1618 si stabilì ad Amsterdam accanto alla libreria di Willem Jansz. Joannes Janssonius (Arnhem, 1588-1664), son of the Arnhem publisher Jan Janssen, married Elisabeth Hondius, daughter of Jodocus Hondius, in Amsterdam in 1612. After his marriage, he settled down in this town as a bookseller and publisher of cartographic material. In 1618 he established himself in Amsterdam next door to Blaeu’s book shop. He entered into serious competition with Willem Jansz. Blaeu.. His activities not only concerned the publication of atlases and books, but also of single maps and an extensive book trade with branches in Frankfurt, Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Koningsbergen, Geneva, and Lyon. In 1631 he began publishing atlases together with Henricus Hondius. In the early 1640s Henricus Hondius left the atlas publishing business completely to Janssonius. Competition with Joan Blaeu, Willem’s son and successor, in atlas production prompted Janssonius to enlarge his Atlas Novus finally into a work of six volumes, into which a sea atlas and an atlas of the Old World were inserted. After the death of Joannes Janssonius, the shop and publishing firm were continued by the heirs under the direction of Johannes van Waesbergen (c. 1616-1681), son-in-law of Joannes Janssonius. The copperplates from Janssonius’s atlases were afterwards sold to Schenk and Valck.

Una bella mappa del Tirolo italiano, tra cui il Lago di Garda, Brescia, Verona e il distretto di Venezia. Nel 1607 Jodocus Hondius pubblicò in versione ridotta il famoso "Atlas" di Gerard Mercator, anch'esso intitolato "Atlas Minor".Le mappe furono copiate dal grande cartografo Mercator intorno al 1580-90 o furono riduzioni delle mappe di Hondius del 1606. le numerose edizioni successive e la varietà di pubblicazioni derivate in stile simile. In 1607 Jodocus Hondius published a reduced size version of Gerhard Mercator's renowned "Atlas", itself suitably titled "Atlas Minor". The maps were copied from those of the great cartographer Mercator of around 1580-90 or were reductions of Hondius' own maps of 1606. The popularity of the smaller format and reduced price, compared with the folio issues of "Atlas", was reflected in the many subsequent editions and in the variety of derivative publications in similar style. Almost 20 years later the map and atlas publisher Joannes Janssonius commissioned a new set of copperplates to be engraved by Pieter Van Den Keere (often signed Kaerius) and Abraham Goos, two of the most proficient and experienced Dutch map engravers of the period. These maps were elegantly designed with decorative title cartouches, finely engraved and surprisingly detailed, elements particularly noticeable in their early printings, as here. In 1604, Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) – probably trought Cornelis Claesz - bought the copperplates of Mercator’s Atlas sive cosmographicae meditationes de fabrica mundi at the auction of Gerard Jr.’s effects. He added about 40 maps, including new maps of the Continents and important regional maps of the Americas, before publishing a new edition of the Atlas, in 1606, in competition with Ortelius’ Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. As many of the maps were more up-to-date, the Mercator-Hondius Atlas effectively superseded Ortelius’ Theatrum. This atlas from 1606 include all 107 maps from the 1595 edition, as well as 37 new maps, skillfully engraved by Hondius, of various authors. The second edition of the Mercator-Hondius atlas followed as soon as 1607/08. The first edition in another language, French, was put on the market in 1609. Apparently this one was regarded as the third edition, because in 1611 Editio Quarta appeared with a total of 150 maps. After the death of Jodocus Hondius in 1612 his widow and sons continued the publication of the Atlas. For instance Jodocus Junior (1594-1629) produced several new editions of the Editio Quarta between 1613 and 1619, each with the same 150 maps. Finally in 1619 the last edition of this atlas followed, to which six new maps were added. After 1620 the publication of the Atlas was continued by Henricus Hondius (ca. 1596/97-1651), the second son of Jodocus senior. Various editions appeared, in 1623, 1628 and 1630. Henricus Hondius was the first to make some real changes: in the 1628 edition he provided some Mercator maps with his own name. In 1630, when he was probably already cooperating with his brother-in- law Johannes Janssonius, Henricus added nine new maps. Copperplate, fine original colouring, good condition. Edizione latina. Joannes Janssonius (Arnhem, 1588-1664), son of the Arnhem publisher Jan Janssen, married Elisabeth Hondius, daughter of Jodocus Hondius, in Amsterdam in 1612. After his marriage, he settled down in this town as a bookseller and publisher of cartographic material. In 1618 he established himself in Amsterdam next door to Blaeu’s book shop. He entered into serious competition with Willem Jansz. Blaeu.. His activities not only concerned the publication of atlases and books, but also of single maps and an extensive book trade with branches in Frankfurt, Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Koningsbergen, Geneva, and Lyon. In 1631 he began publishing atlases together with Henricus Hondius. In the early 1640s Henricus Hondius left the atlas publishing business completely to Janssonius. Competition with Joan Blaeu, Willem’s son and successor, in atlas production prompted Janssonius to enlarge his Atlas Novus finally into a work of six volumes, into which a sea atlas and an atlas of the Old World were inserted. After the death of Joannes Janssonius, the shop and publishing firm were continued by the heirs under the direction of Johannes van Waesbergen (c. 1616-1681), son-in-law of Joannes Janssonius. The copperplates from Janssonius’s atlases were afterwards sold to Schenk and Valck. Incisione in rame, coloritura coeva, in ottime condizioni.

Esemplare tratto dalla ristampa di Janssonius-Waesberghe "Tooneel der vermaarste Koop-Steden", Amsterdam 1682. Pianta della città per la prima volta inserita nel "Theatrum praecipuarum urbium" celebre teatro delle città del Janssonius, sullo stile del "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" di Braun & Hogenberg. L'opera, pubblicata nel 1657, contiene 500 tavole raffiguranti città di ogni parte del mondo. Contrariamente al lavoro degli acerrimi rivali Blaeu, Janssonius si servì per la realizzazione dell'opera delle lastre di precedenti cartografi ed editori. In particolare nel 1653 egli acquisto da Abraham Hogenberg le lastre del "Civitates orbis Terrarum" che incorporò nella sua opera, ristampandole. Per le piante delle città olandesi, ordinò delle nuove lastre basate sull'atalnte che Johannes Blaeu diede alla luce nel 1649. Per molte delle opere contenute nel 5° volume, quello dedicato all'Italia e denominato "Theatrum celebriorum urbium Italiae..", si servì delle lastre realizzate da Jodocus Hondius per l'opera "Italia Hodierna.." del 1627.Incisione in rame, in ottimo stato di conservazione. Opera molto rara. City plan first included in the "Theatrum praecipuarum urbium", the famous city-plans book realized by Janssonius after Braun & Hogenberg's "Civitates Orbis Terrarum". The work was published in 1657, with 500 plates depicting cities from all over the world. In opposition to his main competitors, the Blaeus, to realize his project, Janssonius used the plates of former cartographers and publishers. In 1653 he bought from Abraham Hogenberg the plates of the "Civitates orbis Terrarum" which have been then included in his work. As far as Dutch cities, he had new plates realized after Johannes Blaeu's Atlas, published in 1649. Capilettera istoriati incisi in xilografia e fregi tipografici anch'essi in xilografia. Precedono componimenti poetici di dedica di vari autori e varie dedicatorie in prosa, nonché un indice e alcune avvertenze ai lettori. Bruniture e fioriture, leggeri aloni, fori di talo al margine bianco di alcune carte. Bell'esemplare. Terza edizione (la prima era stata impressa a Napoli nel 1588), rara; tutti gli esemplari si presentano privi delle 2 figure e della pianta dell'isola annunciate al frontespizio. In questo celebre trattato, lo Jasolini (medico e filosofo calabrese, nato intorno al 1530 e morto nel 1620, professore di anatomia presso l'Università di Napoli) fu il primo a discorrere organicamente delle acque medicinali dell'isola d'Ischia, si dà conto delle molteplici patologie curabili tramite tali rimedi idriterapici.
